Hi Derrick,

Not to shore which dome your talking about, the USN ships had the bow sonar as per the photo. I know the RAN had a different type fitted to there ships. Also they had both short and long hull version ships, I'm making is a short hull version.

As for the RATs  sorry I can’t help  :D

She's looking good Dave! I see that some had missile launchers rather than gun turrets.

You must have a vast collection of moulds by now?

Thanks Ian, she going slow as I’ve know switch back to USS Roosevelt. There is still a few of these ship still in service with other countries and have had refit, upgrades so will still be in service for some time yet.

Must say I’ve not seen the gun upgraded ships, but I have seen the vertical missile silo launcher versions.

As for my moulds, Yes I do have a vast amount and still growing. However some of the early moulds are starting to get a bit worn out and will have to be redone. One of the reason I always keep to master fittings is to allow me the remake the moulds and have proof that the moulded fitting is my work and not copies.

Hi Dave,

As a moulder and caster of many years now. I always keep the masters as they are the proof that what is coming out of the mould is original and not pirated. Even if you use resin Patterns to make your moulds you will be able to offer them as well as the masters for scrutiny if anyone ever needed to.

Even though the resin patterns might shrink slightly, they are still the same style as their parent master so can be easily discerned as original designed by you and not piracy.

Also, your transparency on Mayhem is concrete proof that your work is original. I respect your thoroughness but would not worry as not all commercially available fittings are as good as yours, or indeed as good as fittings made by a number of modellers on this forum.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your comments it’s nice to have fellow modellers give such pleasing feed back. :-)) :-))

I have a couple of friends who make and sale fittings commercially and they have had people copy there fittings. So that’s why I’m so keen to make shore all my work is fully trackable.

Dave......in my previous life I spent many hours on HMAS Adelaide's [FFG01] weapons systems ...[both in-service & refit]

Adelaide was built in the US as the lead vessel in our Class of FFG's]

Certainly in the Class in service, the original Oto Melara Mk75, 76 mm gun [ mounted just FWD of the engines low profile exhaust stack] was the original fitment for US builds, & I believe the only revisions to the mount were in the electronic control systems, and not in the mount itself

The Mk75 mounts were affectionately termed as 'Pop Guns' within our RAN

1 × Mark 13 Missile Launcher for Harpoon and Standard missiles
  • The  VLMS [Vertical launch missile system] was a latter upgrade

Hi Derek,

That’s what I believed that the gun mount was only upgrade in its electronics.
I know the Polish navy OHP have had the
The Mk41 VLS can hold up to 32 ESSM added forward of the first fit missile launcher.

There is certainly nothing inspiring with the 76mm Oto Melara firing.......there are no vantage points to view the mount, with the exception of closed circuit camera display in the FCS room, and with the limited arc of fire, and the non-pointing Zones across both beams, dictates the vessel must be near at 90 degrees to the target, however the maneuverability of the vessel at speed provides a timely execution of fire

However witnessing [again via closed circuit] the firing of a Standard missile from the GMLS13 launcher was one of the things a person will never forget in a hurry  :-X

Meanwhile I'll settle for watching yours coming together.

So Rich says.........'everything so crisp and sharp!' ......... so true  O0 .....if we didn't know better we would think they were CAD images & not actual build modules

[I say modules, as the Australian manufacture of FFG vessels was modular......yep the bridge module fabricated in Queensland, Sydney had a midships blocks,......then all barged down to Wildock in Victoria to glue them onto the hull]  :D

I really wouldn't want to spoil the OP's thread with an image of a model bowl of spaghetti + Parmesan Cheese? ...as my current build  {-)

However I assure you I do have a little knowledge on the real FFG's ......spent more than a few hours in live magazines of SAMS <*<  for the GMSL13 Launcher, helped de-jam a belt-brace of 20mm bullets from a CIWS, and squeezed into the fibreglass hood/shell of the 76mm Pop Gun....trying to read Italian text part numbers {-)

Thanks Rich, I’m please your enjoying this build.

Back in the late 80s when I started this project I lost interest with it as hull frames and skinning was not going well so it was put into storage. Then in the 90s as most of the actual OHPs were being decommissioned, retired, sold or scraped, the model came out of storage, but again I lost interest in it. So as it returned again, I read that the US Navy still have 12 long hull in there mothball fleet that they are looking in to reactivating. I think the model has more chance to seeing service than the mothball fleet.

Hi Derek,

I can sympathies with you trying to find part numbers, had the same issue getting in to confined spaces on loading arm hydronic units look for German part numbers.

What happened to the HMSA OHPs have they been sold to others like some of the US navy’s OHPs and that are still in service today.

Dave....

The history of Australia purchasing OHP Frigates is long and shaded, suffering Political interference  >>:-( from day 1, of the intent to purchase 4 vessels ...to the Australian build or and refit upgrades approved by an alternate :-X Government years later

This was compounded by the physical footprint of the Australian continent and how best to protect it, be it by Destroyers, Coastal Patrol vessels or Frigates? ...[bearing in mind that OHPF had an~~ 5000 NM range before they run out of Kerosene for the thirsty GE 250LM turbines]

The Wiki extract provides a surprisingly accurate overview of the Adelaide Class vessels, which will answer your question [but without going overboard from the original thread]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide-class_frigate

Looking forward to your build continuing  :-))
