Just a thought which you may already know, do you know why most carriers have their superstructure on the starboard (right) side? Most pilots are right handed and there is a human instinct to dive left when faced with danger - protecting yourself with your stronger side. So when a pilot lands and it goes wrong the instinct is to go to port or left to avoid. Not good if the superstructure is in the way!

Model is looking good.

Would think it was more to do with the direction that a prop plane tends to swing on take off. With the direction of rotation of most aircraft engines at the time they would trend to swing to the port when the tail lifted. It would make sense to have the superstructure to starboard so the plane wouldn't swing into it if the pilot failed to catch the swing in time. The swing is due to a combination of torque reaction and the helical airflow from the propeller hitting the vertical tail surface.

Engines rotated in both directions in those days- the Merlin was opposite to the griffon as an example

 1.   But who built the first Aircraft carrier

2.   When

3   And why starboard side, because I am sure props only went one way  ....maybe

Hi Phil  :-))

1 it’s a toss up between the Royal Navy and the Japanese Navy
2 depends as most were experimental until about 1937 with the Ark Royal being the first true fleet carrier
3 props on aircraft can rotate in both directions depending on the engine

I believe this initially gave problems when changing from Merlin engined Seafires to Griffin engined as they would swing in different directions on take off.

Earlier military aircraft engines were mostly rotating in the same direction, this is shown by the old Hucks starter which fitted to a dog on the propellor shaft, it could only rotate in one direction. Before starters began to be fitted to engines it made sense that they would all rotate the same way so that ground crew would always know which way to hand start.

We actually built the first operational carriers, Furious, and Courageous were converted in WW1 albeit with superstructures amidships, then along came HMS Argus in 1918.

We also carried out the worlds first maritime airstrike in history at Tondern attacking the Zeppelin sheds.

In 1919 we planed for an air strike with torpedo bombers on the High Seas Fleet - if they won't come out to fight we planned to go in and get them, but the war ended before the strike force put to sea. About a hundred aircraft including torpedo bombers. One of the interesting aspects was how to drop torpedoes in shallow water, which we perfected. A torpedo dives a lot on impact and in shallow water would hit the bottom so ships in relatively shallow water could not be attacked from the air. We sorted the technical issues and naturally shared this information with our allies, including America, and Japan!!

We also invented the angled flight deck and steam catapults and the mirror landing sight! All of which were widely copied

To flip this back to left/right handed. Japan built carriers with the superstructure on the port side - most were changed!

Cheers

Japanese are credited to having first carrier designed and built as such in service. We built the fist one HMS Hermes but she entered service after the Japanese one

That lift looks like you could use it as a car jack - impressive engineering!

Today HMS Victorious had her maiden basin sail, and considering its running at the moment on a single shaft with plastic 35 mm prop it sailed a dream and far better than I expected for first sail and as with Phoebe minimum throttle need

Your lift is a good solid bit of model engineering topped with some nice paintwork.

Hi Rob,

Impressive lift, many years ago I had both lift working on my 1/96 modern HMS Ark Royal. I’ve drawn a very rough sketch
