HMS Victtorious
« on: August 10, 2021, 10:09:20 pm »

Couple of images of latest build, constructed the way I now like best, keel frames, no stringers and no screwing to the bench, for the first time i have used liteply from SLEC in 2mm thickness, soak it for 30 mins in warm water then pin it to the frames, let dry then remove and any final trilming, it leaves a perfect shaped plate that only rewuires gluing.  Bilit one side complete and now warping or distortion, very happy with it,  Its 1/144, so if anyone knows of Buccaneer or Gannets in that scale give me a buzz

Wels Models do vacforms of the Bucc and AEW Gannet in 1/144, but they're the only game in town AFAIK.

Very impressive :-)
Looks every part the HMS Victorious I’ve seen in many books. If I find any 1/144 scale aircraft I’ll pass them your way.

Depends on how much you want to spend! Gannet AEW resin as bonus in this one from Hannants at £90.00! https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/ANIG4050?result-token=mSKI2Welsh Models, again via Hannants, do gannet and bucaneer at about £18.00 each https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/WHPJW08?result-token=mSKI2 and https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/WHPJW16?result-token=mSKI2
They're the vacforms that Kit posted.Shapeways do a buccaneer for about £18.00 as well https://www.shapeways.com/product/KWS3PCMK9/blackburn-buccaneer-s-2?optionId=181901408&li=marketplaceThere are a couple of Gannets as well AS1 and AEW3 https://www.shapeways.com/product/UG3J5JE24/fairey-gannet-aew-3?optionId=182884965&li=marketplace or https://www.shapeways.com/product/SZAL66ZAH/fairey-gannet-as-i?optionId=182885375&li=marketplace

Tony dont think I will go for the resin gannet as its two kits and Nimrod would look out of place.  I know about Welsh Mods, bu vac form and i do not seem to get on  {-)   Saw Shapeways Bucc so for the same price as vac I can have ready built.  Thanks for the input.

Glad to be of service! The Shapeway ones look to be pretty good, especially the Gannet AEW3. Hannants do loads of job-specific decals as well.

Shots showing how Victorious hull has come on.  Basic shape and center shaft and rudder all fitted, now waiitnig to coat it with the finishing gel coat to seal it all.  Then a start on the island as that will be plastic and can be done indoors now winter approaches.

It amazes me how you get ply to form into such shapes. It's a bit like forming car body panels without the useful stretching of the metal.

This is the finished hull, before I start to detail.  My methode of building seems to have worked very well and produced a hull which is as strong as fibreglass, but without the mess.  Keel and frames built on flat surface but not fixed, 2mm litepley soaked and pined to shape, when dry it produces a shaped piece that will not starighten out, once all hull sheeted it was covered with Homebases finest, ready mixed plaster, then rubbed down to give nice smooth coat.  I was adamnat that not a drop of fibreglass was to be used.  Coated the hull with three coats of expoxy finishing resin as reccomended by the maunfacturer.  Set rock  hard and is easy to work.  At this rate she may get her flotation trials earlier than anticipated.
The shadows make it look as if there is a narrowing of the stern then it levels out again, this is just an illusion %%

I'm not a fan of fibreglass and so seeing different alternatives to it are always gladly studied. Steve, Nick's Dad has an alternative method to Fibreglassing as well that I am looking at.

Small update, have managed to get forward part of flight deck illuminated, the distribution board is brilliant and @£10 worth it, running 3mmm 3v LED from 12v source and each bank has varaible lighting, makes eventually for a very tidy lighting loom.  Very pleased with the result.  Just need to brave the cold and take it back to the hull.

Interesting and can you supply details of the PCB board where and when you purchased it as it looks kind of neat. Is the input voltage also variable?

Thanks

Geoff
If you search layouts4u you will find it there, its a model railway site but the service is amazing, I asked if it would do what I thought so they wired one up and tested it, also sent a question on a Sunday and got a reply that night, the board will go to 16 v.  The LED I am using are 4 @12v and remained 3v, no need to change any settings at all, except the brightness. I am chuffed to bits with it.
