Graupner SARS
« on: August 17, 2021, 09:32:04 pm »

Another build I am doing is a Graupner kit, was never really a fan of these kits but after seeing this kit for sale I did a little searching and found that the hull is a real tough piece of work with deck molded and hull made from printed plasticard and no vac form moldings on this one which is good, good set of fittings with rubber fenders and three full size plans, enjoyable build..

Hi is that the KY models Hertha Jeep kit?

https://www.elitemodelsonline.co.uk/Boats/By-Manufacturer/Premium-Line/96119-/Premium-Line-Hertha-Jeep-120-Scale-Model-Boat-Kit

You say "molded" so maybe you got from outside the UK, my KY "mouldings" for the moorig tug were pretty awful without some hefty massaging and I should just have sent them back as nothing worked remotely straight or true in the end, as atrractive as these kits are I'll never recomend or buy another of these printed kits.  Give me a set of vac. forms any day over badly warped and twisted printed parts allbeit on their other offerings!

...I'm interested how you get on with yours.

It’s an original Graupner.

Hi, I was possibly being a bit harsh on the more modern KY copes of the Graupner kits.  It does look an interesting prototype.  Hopefully the prints are better than the newer attempts and it goes together well.

This looks like a very good kit and a bargain given the quality and price. I realise that it was discounted, even at full price, this inclusive kit is excellent value. It's interesting to see the SAR designs of other countries (Sweden or Germany?).

For a quick build kit it’s taking some building/spraying, must admit it’s easier doing the bigger boats, I think this kit is being released soon by another company in Germany, also in 1/12 scale which will look well. I have repainted the wheelhouse after realizing the orange didn’t go down to deck level on the sides, oops.

This model would look good at any size and I am sure a larger scale version would be welcomed. You are making a very good job of masking/painting. I look forward to seeing it completed and sailing.

Thanks, since I came out of intensive care (Covid) and was housebound I built a few Tamiya static kits which got me using there masking tape, top notch and never get any bleed through.

Glad to hear you are recovering ok since.  Great work Russell. I got my Hertha Jeep this past week. A few mouldings seem a bit different but I've not unwrapped everything yet. I'll be fitting a 4mm prop shaft and unlike many internet posts so far my skeg seems straight so far.  I am quite surprised how big it is for the money including a motor and servo -plenty of bang for the buck for the size it is!!!  It's not that small and I seem to have a full bundle of full size drawings in the box also.

....yes tamiya tape is superb. If in doubt usual practice of shooting a very thin layer of underlying colour first, then go for the different one on top and peel-back as soon as you dare to not leave hard edges.
