If you are using two motors to drive one output shaft if the two motors are not rotating at exactly the same RPM then surely the faster motor will be driving the slower motor thus making the slower motor redundant in producing power.
Or am I not understanding the technicalities correctly here?

Technally, yes, but in actual practice the losses are minimal, as long as the motors are pretty evenly matched.
Under no load, the faster motor will drive most of the load   .... but there is no load.
Under load, both motors will drive the load as hard as they can and not fighting each over.

A few weeks ago, I said...."In gearing, only one thing better than a single helical, is Herringbone, or double reversed helical"
...& I still think this holds true, however this builder maybe did not follow the assembly plans? >>:-(

if you have a tug boat and you want a power full towing motor
 try a buhler motor ideal
very low drain on battery
 will tow all day
i use them on northsider tug    wow
there is nothing more to say
 but good luck
