Harro Koebke
« on: September 10, 2021, 05:54:40 pm »

Another kit I have ready to build around Christmas time is the Harro Koebke, this is a KYModels kit and to be honest it’s the best kit I have seen in a good few years, the hull and deck are 2-3mm thick and it is rock solid all through, there are around 500 fittings, daughter boat “Notariius” is included along with her jet drive, there is all the running gear including motors but will install brushless in this one, the fittings quality are second to none.

Very nice - I have been after a kit of that boat for ages!!!

Where did you purchase it from?

Is the superstructure moulded as well?

The kit is from KYModels, apart from the hull and deck being pre-joined everything else is built up from the supplied plasticard/abs, I ordered the biggest Raboesch bow thruster with the brass props yesterday but there is also a thruster supplied in the kit..

This is an excellent kit. What are the hull dimensions? It looks like a large sized hull.

Wow that is a big boat at 45" x 11" and it will present well on the water. Like you I prefer larger models and find them easier to work on.

Yes I like the bigger boat but they play havoc with my back, luckily there are some good guys who get down the lake who will give me hand..

Like you I have a back problem. I used to use two slings with handles/spreaders to transfer the boat from the cradle to the water and vice versa. This was doable with care. Lifting the boat and cradle up and down from ground level was the biggest risk. I redesigned the cradle to have extra width and also have slings fore and aft.
I am looking forward to your build.

Only a small tentative start but with the daughter boat, other jobs that needed doing have got in the way over Xmas, jet drive dry fitted, the steering nozzle control arm caught on the stern so need trimming down slightly, also made a start on the wheelhouse.

The wheelhouse took some filling and fettling today but it’s coming on slowly, still a way to go on it yet,  quite a detailed model when finished as you can see from last picture..

Decided have a pop at making a bow thruster up this afternoon, the hull on the main ship is quite a narrow V so an off the shelf bow thruster for the diameter required ends up with the props protruding out the hull so it meant making one with a paddle, this sits in the base of the hull and ended up quite a neat system..

Hullo Russell....yes, this is a pretty neat system & build

Am I assuming that any water bypassing the seal above the impeller, would/could only fill to the water level?.......or is the shaft seal sufficient to stop any leakage?

Hi Derek,

The disc nearest the paddle is bonded in the tube so no water will pass into the tube only around the paddle, the two cut outs are for access to the coupling and to fit a grease tube to the shaft.

Grease lubrication is a good idea Russell, not necessarily for the normal requirement, however running a teflon/metal seal and relying on the water a the lubricant medium is fraught with danger in inadvertently running the unit for a prolonged test or whatever but DRY

I have seen a full scale teflon/metal water seal with a melted element, but this was not discovered >>:-(  until the seal was subjected to immersion, & hence leaked profusely <*<

Derek

[edit] Russell ...will you be using a speed controller on the motor?......during your tests it will be interesting to see the force created by the impeller blades at different voltages.......the very short suction tube length [on either side] will help in minimising cavitation.....

A good morning Russell
i have bought the same kit a couple of weeks ago from a german modelyachtbuilder.
He has made a brand new Notarius and changed the jet drive system.
How far are you on your actual built?
Looking forward to hear from you
