What I've been up to
« on: October 08, 2021, 06:31:01 pm »

A rest from boats.
I bought a 70 yr old stationary engine to restore.

It turned out to be a lot more involved than I imagined.

How I found it

Today almost complete

How are you going to use the "stationary engine" after restoring..?
As a part of generator in emergency or for outdoor life for leisure,etc..?
At any rate,it looks so useful.! O0 :-)

Are you refurbishing the makers plate with
the engine details, Andy?
Any idea why green was the standard colour
for gas oil and petrol engines back in the day?
Great refurb Mate👍

Thanks Ned
As I understand it the correct colour up to a point in 1951 was mid Brunswick green.
I guess it was a colour that was commonly available and used through the industry.
For some reason the last person to play with this painted over the original lighter green to make it look older perhaps.
When I stripped it the original colour was beneath.
I’ve not used that colour but used Emerald green instead same as my tug  O0

I have the original plate which is quite scratched because the muppet didn’t use a paint stripper
I will rivet it back on when I polish and clear coat it.

Now with the sought after Burgess wet air filter. I'm just waiting for a 135 degree angle connecting hose.

EDIT DOH!!! Just realised I need a 45 degree hose  {-)

Cannot get the immortal words of Chief Brody out of my head while following this !
Nice job Andy, looks better than when it rolled out of the factory !
Petters sound great with their incredibly slow tick over - could be the answer to the huge hike in energy prices on the horizon.

Cheers Paul  :-)

I've an interest in old spanners now too  O0

A bit more tweeking today. The belt drum is left without the gib key in for easy removal as the bare crankshaft is handy for manoeuvring.

Hi Andy, I think some spanners are beautiful and deserve to be hung on the dining room wall, BUT, I have to draw the line somewhere. The wee wifie is ok with the boats, thank goodness, Bill

More progress, nearly finished.
Today I tuned it up and ground off the working surfaces whilst running.
I just want to divert the exhaust vertically now, parts on the way.

I shuffled the boat yard around so it looks like I've done something  {-)

Meanwhile I'm on with another trolley to carry a vintage water pump to drive.
A new friend of mine asked experienced hobby people why they show their engines. Apparently they get free entry worth £30 a head in most cases then go around the show with wife and kids with an hourly check on their engine  {-)

Well I thought that was that BUT the wife has softened and allowed my to buy another engine.
I've been looking for a scrapper for free but its cost me £20 plus £20 in diesel and my new friend who drove got a corn mill for £30 that is fantastic but I couldn't take that on myself. So it balanced out well.
So this engine was seized up and all the tin work is totally rotten so unusable but it has turned into a treasure trove of parts.
I got it turning and now there just remains a stuck exhaust valve, this will free off with plus gas.
The carburettor despite  being in a sorry state will come up like near new. I found that it left the factory faulty as the float chamber drain hole had not been drilled far enough to connect with the drain tap  {-)  (best of English Engineering)

I believe due to the above that this engine breathed its final breath due to dirty fuel and fouled up carb after almost 30 yrs then was abandoned for the next 30. So it has only had half a life and as a reward for this all the internals are pretty damn fantastic!
I figure there are many hundreds of pounds of parts here after I spend very many hours harvesting them. For certain I will be fusing the best of my two engines into one Prime unit  8)  then looking for the missing parts to build up a reserve.

Even this head gasket it worth £15
Yes they are meant to be re used if un damaged.

Pretty fantastic condition magneto drive after I cleaned it up. Easy money

New project tomorrow is the making of a new all in one trolley to carry the engine on the right and the pump in the foreground close coupled. I'm still short of parts for engine 2 but its getting there.
This picture gives a better impression of what the colours actually look like.
