They all look in good shape even before you start refurb work Andy.
Have you not had any issues lifting them about ie into car and from car to bench?
Usually listed as heavy otherwise I'd like to work on project like this as a change.
They end up looking brand new! Really worthwhile.

They are all sub 25kg and they are not in good shape internally which is why they fell into disuse. Users were lazy and often lost or misplaced the correct tools then resorted to violence  {-)

Hmm, those links shed a rather different light on condition and clearly show the extent of your refurbishment work, far more than I expected to see.
25kg still a good lift for me.

My current project the 1938 Lister pump set is providing challenges.
The Magneto a Lucas RS1 has a top cover cap of Bakelite that has seen better days and the contact screw thread is badly damaged from previous poor attempts to remove the steel screw (bad design)

I appealed for a second hand replacement but that met a stone wall.
So left with no alternative but to have a go at a fix I did!
I cleaned the fixed part up enough to apply solder flux

Then tinned the contact face and a 4 mm brass nut before positioning for soldering together.

With the aid of a chopped down motor coupling I could put a 4mm brass screw in the lathe

To produce a contact screw how it ought to be

Penetrates right thought the HT lead and secures it in place.

Final clean up and all the many cracks in the 84 year old Bakelite were treated to Zap-a-Gap CA

I'm hoping the magneto coil and capacitor are still working

The cast iron base was stripped and primed. The consensus is that it was most likely satin black originally

Having salvaged what was usable from the trolley I rebuilt it with better axles and smaller wheels. It was also too narrow so this was altered too. I wanted the trolley to look more like a concrete plinth as this would never have been a mobile unit.

Winter project won't last to the new year. Nearly ready to start on the pump which is mainly a cosmetic strip service and paint.

I got more info about my engine
Lister D No 148091 was supplied to Gibson Bros of Melling Lancs. on 17-5-1939

Thank you Ray
This hobby is no different to model boats in terms of the different types of people LOL rivet counters and purists thrive.
Manufacturers cut many corners to save every penny so most restorers of my type produce an engine better than it ever was and just like boats you never can get back what you invest but the pleasure is in the journey.

Are there any common problems you find when refurbishing?
Can you obtain parts easy enough?

That's very much like how long is a piece of string.
Rust and seized threads are common as well as wear. It all depends on the condition to begin with and its past life..
Rare engines will all suffer hard to find parts.
A Lister D type was probably the most successful engine in history produced over many decades so there are parts around even if taken from another incomplete engine.

For all engines the expensive parts are Magneto/ Carburettor/ Fuel tank/ Starting handle/ exhaust & muffler.
People buy engines just to harvest the parts and turn £100 into £300 for the bits. There's good and bad to that, the loser is the donor engine but the winner could be 2 or 3 running engines.

This 1938 will be running this week, I'm now working on the water pump it drives

Last week I made a new trolley for the Petter in the background. I sold the old one for £50 which went a long way towards making the new.
That now weighs 120kg complete. 16kg is the trolley.

That's some weight to manoeuvre? On wheels only I guess.
Nice work, all of them. Just the weight that worries me about getting involved.
Your photos are very tempting!
Thanks.

Taranis, are you familiar with the Amberley Museum in Sussex, thay have a good collection of old domestic engines.

https://www.amberleymuseum.co.uk/explore/explore-industry/stationary-steam-engines/

It is just 45 minute drive from us and I have visted several times, probably overdue for another after it reopens next month after the winter break although I'll probably wait for the Spring. A fascinating collection of exhibits in a beautiful setting.

Thanks no but I wouldn’t use fuel to go see static engines. I’m only interested in outdoor crank up meets that are not too far
