71" (1.8m) TID Tug Build (Cont'd!)
« on: October 29, 2021, 02:19:42 am »

Hi guys,

I Decided to start a new thread for my build as my previous thread have broken links to all the images :(

...sooo to kick it off, My electric board is pretty much done, but I'm going to be adding a P103 Parallel Power Board to bump up the capacity for longer run times.

Here's a few pics, I've done a dry test & connected everything up & ran it as I would for a good 40+ mins constant, everything seems good (touch wood!) the 2 step up converters barely get warm which is a bonus! will add some vid tommoz, I have to say, the BIER sound module is a top notch piece of kit, its a lot more than just a sound module! ..takes a little getting to grips with the software as there's hundreds of options for lights/fans/sounds etc!

Will take some vid tommoz, I'm pretty happy with the outcome, took a while to complete but worth it i think, Next on the agenda is to complete my second take on the stack (my 1st attempt was good, but the stack was slightly too large! so i made a start on a new one.

Oh yes it does, Paxolin (Tufnol - SRBP or F) isn't subject to static charges.

Wheel almost done, made from scratch using wood & some thin brass rod, gave it a coat of stain/varnish going to give a couple of more coats & tidy it up with a little sanding :)

Last pic has an AA battery in view for size comparison,

Electric Board/Box complete :)

Finally finished my electric box :D

i made this box using bits of ply & Perspex, I also decided to fit a 12v fan to the case that i had laying around to help keep the temperature inside the case low. The fan is connected to the Beier USM-RC2 module & I have programmed the module so the case fan operates at 60% & it will also automatically switch off if there has been no signal from the TX after 1 min. It will automatically turn on again as soon as there is a signal again from the TX (Such as forward on throttle or light switch etc). I decided to use pluggable terminal blocks, these are pretty neat & will allow me to insert/remove the electric box with ease :) The two servo extension wires you see are for the Rudder servo lead & the main power switch which i will be fitting somewhere above deck but hidden for easy access to turn the model on/off, I will probably fit the power switch under one of the engine room hatches.

Next the Agenda, is to cover the deck with some filler & also some UPOL Dolphin Glaze as recommended to me by someone in the know! & get it ready for painting along with the hull.

Why two BUCK 24v converters?

NB: If you still have the images from the previous thread Daz, I'll happily re-add them for you.  :-))

Deck is now fixed in place & added the coaming, the coaming was fixed in place by screws & also some Titebond III wood glue. The coaming will be covered in Body filler/dolphin glaze when i do the deck to give it a nice finish & watertight seal.

so she's now ready for the deck to be filled using this stuff:

Big Boy Ultra Fine Body Filler

& then i will use this to finish off:

I also fit some Ferrules to my cable ends for the pluggable terminal blocks, I bought the tool from Ebay, and have to say it works perfectly, i tested out the fit by trying to pull the ferrule off with force using a pair of pliers, no chance! it was well & truly fixed on, the crimp tool kit cost just over £14 and that was with 1200 connectors of various sizes (AWG 10 through to AWG22) delivered!

So next will be filling the deck & finishing it off so i can then get on with the Superstructure build! :)

Finished the new stack!

The old one was slightly too big so i remade it & now its exactly true to scale, i just need to complete the top/bottom of it & the details etc!

The one on the left is the OLD one compared to the new one on the right side :)

They were both made using planking & some plumbing tube for the centre with wooden/plastic discs as spacers.

righty!

So I've almost complete new stack, just got to finish off the top of it & then paint it, the colours will be green body with a dark/racing green top section to match what the hull green colour will be.

I've also added a couple of shelves at bottom of hull to place the ballast tubs, just need to add a couple more shelves to the forward & aft of the hull. I'm hoping (if my calculations are correct!!) that the ballast tubs which will total 25kg & then the 4 SLA's which total 25kg along with the superstructure/electric board and all the other bits & pieces etc that this will be more than enough to ballast her :)

filled deck using Big Boy Ultra Fine 2-Part filler & then a thin coat of U-Pol Dolphin Glaze, Yes my filling skills are not great, but end result I'm happy with and deck feels solid. Once Bulwark supports are all in place i will then be using some high build primer to cover the whole bulwark area & supports.

I also trimmed the top of bulwark edge to give equal width right the way around.

Making a start on the Bulwark supports now, at first i was going to use 5mm ply but someone mentioned that 3mm would be more scale so im using 3mm ply now! It's a VERY time consuming process as every support has a slightly different shape so using a template to make all of them isn't possible. I still need to make about another 30!

After the Bulwark supports are completed i will then fix them in place then i will make a start on the deck planking :)

Makes the supports easier to shape and fit as well since you don't need to worry about matching any fillet between the deck and bulwark.
