Thanks Jim. On the PC I'm having that problem as in my case, Norton, displays a message that the site is dangerous. I can ignore it but it won't let me reply. The Norton licence allows me to use on my tablet but I'm not getting the warning message (I do on a car forum) and as you can see I can reply. So as you say looks like an anti-virus problem.

Another build update.  I've started mahogany planking the planing section of the hull.  Spent a while getting the first two planks shaped, then went for the glue and clamps...



And then alternating sides adding pairs.  Still using the 3D printed T pieces, they seem to be working fine.  I am using conventional clamps at the bow where there's more pressure required and the clamps fit.  Mahogany planks are 1mm smaller than the Lime/Bass planks to avoid joints over joints.



This is latest progress today:





I've noticed some difference in thickness of the mahogany planks, not ideal but not a lot I can do at this stage.  Just have to do a bit more scraping / sanding once they're on, I suppose I can use filler as these planks as it is the underwater surface that will be painted rather than varnished.  I'll lay them out and see if I can at least get some progression between adjacent planks...  Not sure it really shows on this pic, but its there by feel and when running a straight edge over.

@Ray, thanks..! It does indeed feel like progress to be working with the mahogany planks.

And some more progress to report, more planks on.  I've planked around the rudder tubes, but over the prop tube and P bracket cut outs.  I've marked where to cut through for the P brackets, and will drill through from the inside for the prop tubes.



Then reached the chine rail at the bow:



So I added the chine rail plank, and have to admit to using some pins, the curve was just too great to hold any other way...  Not too stressed to be hones, still on the underwater section of the hull, so it'll be painted over.



I also had to use some cuts in the chine plank to get it to curve...  The cuts will be hidden / filled.

I've made some progress toward that day, starboard planing surface of the hull is fully planked:







And I've made another mod to the T clamps to make them more stable.





Very pleased with the hull shape that's coming through. The planks feel like they are conforming well.

Afternoon All

A quick update, the planking of the planing surface is now complete:





Some thickness differences on the planks, but sanding will sort that.  I'm thinking to sand the hull, then look at the cutouts for the P brackets and prop tubes.

Also busy building a proper stand for the hull right now, sled type just like the 1/10th.

More to report.  the 1/5th now has a sled / stand that's same design as the 1/10th:








Needs some foam and some paint...

And I decided to go with scrapers as far as possible, they deliver such a uniform surface, and have helped get the high planks down nicely.  I've been on a mission to get my scrapers properly burnished, it's rewarding to see the shavings come off, and not so much sawdust to breath in...



And it makes the low spots more visible with the right lighting:



Used pencil scribble to gauge where I've been:







Again the scraper makes it a definite yes or no rather than sanding I think...

I used a mix of flat and gooseneck scrapers to deal with the curves, then some filler in places, and some light sanding.



I've now added the first plank to the hull sides at the chine as that finishes the planing section, so now ready to work up...

Afternoon All


Some progress with the side planking:








Still not using pins, and nice to see the sharp chine rail.  I've ordered in some 100gsm cloth and epoxy resin from Easy Composites, I have in mind to add a layer of cloth to the planing surface to add strength and seal, it'll be painted over anyway...  And maybe just wrap the chine rail too to give some protection.  Still planning to use Hemple epoxy as a sealer for sides and topsides before the varnish goes on.


Also starting to template the sides of the transom, these will be cut from a 20mm thick Mahogany plank:

Having to add in my stronger clamps now as there's almost a 90° twist needed in this part of the planking as the bow.






And at the stern the planks are now starting to roll in to form the rounded section:

Happy New Year to All..!

Managed to get some work done on the Aquarama build over the Christmas break, feels like a milestone has been reached, the hull is now double planked with it's mahogany layer.



And from the top, I've run a bead of slow epoxy where the planks leave the hull, just a bit of reinforcing really, it's an area I'll need to drill into to eventually attach the chrome rubbing strip.



And trimmed, but not yet profiled / sanded.






Some filling needed but not too much. I'm planning to use the scrapers again to flatten off the planks.

Also been a little distracted with a renovation of my old Fireboat (built for my son about 25 years ago), now to be crewed by Fireman Sam and Penny and (I hope) enjoyed by my grandson...



And finally, look what Santa brought...

Hi David. Yes it's coming along, slowly...! And yes I'm very pleased to have finally finished the hull planking, it's taken a few weeks. Now working on the solid shoulders that are part of the stern, cutting from a 20mm plank of mahogany. This is second set as I realised I should try to keep the grain horizontal to match the planks.

Still using Titebond 3, seems to perform well and I'm used to it now.  The shaping of the transom 'shoulders' continues, I'm finding it tricky to get the joint with the transom as I'd like it...





I've also got to remove some thickness from the shoulders before bonding to the hull, not sure whether to try with the bandsaw...  If I leave them as is it'll be a lot to sand...

An update on the above. I did use the bandsaw to take 5mm off each of the shoulders and it worked just fine. Will now attach them and sand to shape.

That is beautiful     It is so difficult and time consuming to get both port and starboard side planking uniform.  You've nailed it there - wow!

Hey Mark..!  Thanks for that, and great to see you back at work in your workshop on that beautiful build of yours..!


I have the shoulders in place and roughly shaped, I'll do final shaping when the deck is in place.








Really pleased to have finally found a mahogany coloured filler that's actually mahogany coloured and not some dodgy shade of purple / red... (Yes Osmo, you know I mean you... )  It's from Ever Build, 'Mahogany' coloured, and cheap as chips on Amazon.  A couple of places on the inner radius of the shoulders it was possible to see a dark glue line, so I ground it out very lightly with a mini tool diamond disc and filled with the Ever Build filler, looks a lot better. 


Rant over, moving on...  Been getting the scrapers out again for the sides of the hull.  Had to order a 0.4mm set of curved scrapers to get into the hull flare at the bow, but they work a treat, take off such thin shavings and really help to level the planks and create the curve.  I think they're easier to see where low spots are and as such less likely to take off too much (compared to sanding).  The scrapers do mean no power tool assistance, so I'm doing it in 15 / 20m stints.








Plenty more scraping and sanding...

Lovely work    and I agree with you regarding the scrapers and even better less dust.


I like your recommendation for the filler - I wonder what their oak filler is like for comparison?  I may get some and check it out as I need it for my worktop as I drilled some holes in the wrong place.

@Mark, only other Ever Build I have is the 'Natural - can be stained' offering, I've just been using it as a general filler.  I think they're £3.00 ish for 250ml, so worth a try in Light Oak I'd have thought.

@Phil, look forward to seeing new project..! And I'm sure you'll be at Wicksteed in May, I suspect the boat won't be ready for even a technical (lets see if it floats..) test by the time Mayhem 25 comes around, but I'll bring it up anyway even if just to establish how to get it in the car...
