best filler for deck?
« on: November 13, 2021, 11:33:39 am »

Hi guys,

soon going to be making the deck for my TID,

At the mo i have a tin of UPOL Easy 1 filler that im going to use to go over the ply for my deck. Is this the best filler to use as i don't want anything that's going to be a nightmare to sand afterwards!

Any other suggestions for a good easy to work with filler?

cheers!

Do all your work on the wood before you install deck, it is a might easier off the job than on it. Same with sanding sealer, do it on the bench before cutting your pieces out rather than sanding the job, nemesis

hi mate,

problem is my deck is in 4 sections due to the size of it, so i need to fix it in place before hand so the filler covers all pieces and covers the joins etc so doing it out of the model isn't really an option for me :(

It's a large area so it shouldnt be too bad filling/sanding it i just want to make it as easy as possible when it comes to the sanding bit :D

Assuming you have a wood deck, you need a filler that isn't harder than the deck otherwise you risk getting an uneven surface. Some people will suggest P38 easy sand car filler which is good but I prefer Ronseal High Performance wood filler which is specifically designed for wood and also sands down very easily.

Hi,
Upol is a very good filler but might be tricky to sand in situ once the deck is fixed down, you could grain fill the ply before cutting and trimming to the shapes you need this would be fairly easy and much simpler than trying to sand it in situ. Alternatively you could do what I used to do with the decks on my Tugs I made up scale sized square plates from thin styrene sheet (approx 3 inches square depending on the boat scale) then spent hours punching false rivet heads around the edges of each one these plates were then fitted and glued to the sealed ply deck with superglue. Takes a while but the finish looks good when painted. Hope this helps.
         Regards, Pete. :-))

Hi Daz,
If you want a museum finish Halfords grey primer works well on styrene but flat the surface with 1200 wet n dry before spraying, or if you want a realistic (what happens on a real tug) finish brush paint it with oil based grey undercoat. I tried various reds/greens you name it but in my opinion they never looked right. Re the rivets on the styrene I did this on the reverse side of each piece (approx 5/6mm centres) using a rounded end panel pin punch and a light hammer or round off the end of a nail, practise on a styrene scrap you'll soon get the hang of how hard to hit the punch. Good luck.
                 Cheers, Pete. :-))

Not much need for the rivet technique
on a TID as they were all welded construction
to enable non shipyard engineering workshops
to build units.

I tried the afforementioned U-Pol product on recommendation at the time from someone "expert" and it wasn't great for modelling purposes in MY experience (I never used it on cars either though I used their other products).  Actually I found it horrid for modelling purpose and am left with the rest of the pouch as it doesn't flow or sand easy at all compared to what I am used to over last 30'dd years.

....I'd personally recommend painting your woodwork with z-poxy then sanding back before any thinking of primer if you have the chance as it sounds likke you are in no rush.

...PS you have quite a few posts on the same build spread about. It's much easier if you keep them together on one blog as they make much more sense that way.

I'm guessing that's the Z-Poxy PT40 (finishing resin) ?

Problem is that my deck area is big, so to cover the whole lot including bulwarks with this stuff will cost me a small fortune as I'm guessing i will need quite a lot & it only comes in 12oz at around £25 a pop. It will also need to fill some gaps where the deck is fitted, not huge gaps but there are a few small gaps where the deck meets the bulwark section.

I've been looking at that Ronseal Woodfiller you mentioned earlier, maybe i could use that to do the filling across the whole of deck area instead of the UPOL Easy One, & then go over the top of that with a layer of UPOL dolphin glaze that i have for the finish as dolphin glaze will also add to the strength of the deck which will be a bonus ?

Yeah i see what you mean about my posts being spread out, thing is i want to keep my build thread as a progress thread for the build & i don't want to clutter it with questions/answers such as this topic, but also i will prob get answers more quickly when i ask them in the correct section of forum instead of asking them on my build thread  :-))

Cheers again :)

Hi,
I and others use z-poxy and it's quite surprising how small an amount goes a VERY LONG way and it's NOT only available in one size you say.  I am also not also here to answer "what's the cheapest way" but the title says "best" so if you don't like it then thats different.    Flour and water is also a cheap filler.   There are plenty of filler and glue advice posts out there on the web, nobody will agree on any of them.  Thats what books and magazine articles are for to learn from otherwise you accept 100 answers back on the net.

...You are definately better keeping questions together.  It's how forums traditionally work and is difficult to keep track otherwise.  You have started lots of threads recently completely random but would make much more sence if they were together back on your original thread.

I didn't ask for cheapest way, just the best filler for sanding, i asked about filler as i already have dolphin glaze which is a finisher, so no point in me really purchasing another type of finisher if there is no need. to me it makes more sense to post my questions in the relevant sections of a forum, this way it's usually answered by those with experience in that subject/section, my build thread is for progress of my build thread :)

But after some more research, there is a filler called "Big Boy Ultra Fine Filler" which I've read some reviews that modellers have used & recommend it as it requires very little (if any) sanding, which is exactly what I'm looking for :) its only a light filler but that's fine as i don't need a deep one as i will be using Dolphin Glaze to finish which will good strength, and as an added bonus its £12 for 600ml :)

received this tin of "Big Boy Ultra fine Filler" today.

I will probably make a start over the next few days on filling the deck with it, the filler is a very fine paste, looks very smooth in the tin & the consistency looks good!

Will report back once I've used it!
