Tamiya 1/12 Lotus 78 (12037)
« on: April 29, 2023, 09:51:15 am »

Hi Gents,

I pre ordered this kit a few weeks ago so I had some think to build whilst recovering from my Knee op. It’s noe arrived and I’ve had time to look it over and start building. But disappointed with it reason being.

This kit has been reissued by Tamiya with a few updates. While the plastic parts are identical to the first release, this kit has a fret of photo-etched details and three decal marking options from the 1977 and 1978 seasons. However it’s very disappointing that Tamiya have not produced the John Player Special decals, so it’s not a true replication of the Lotus 78.

The kit has been out of production for some time now, but Tamiya however missed an opportunity to upgrade some of the poor fitting parts the kit had back in the 80’s, so this kit is for an experienced modeller.

The kit does have good clear and easy to follow instruction which make’s it a pleasure to assemble.

Very few major kit manufacturers produce tobacco company's decals these days. It was very different when the kits were first released of course.

Hi Kits,

To get the correct decals from a company in Italy will cost an additional £30.

I was going to say that Hiroboy models used to stock them but they are all out of stock! Their paint range is good though for the cars.

There could be another problem with after market decals. The original decals were biscuit coloured but of course one person's biscuit colour is different from another's and some company's even thought they were gold, its a mine field out there.
