Cigarette free MB plan May 2021
« on: November 22, 2021, 11:54:23 am »

Hi guys I am asking questions on behalf of a new member to our club. He is building the cigarette boat
from the free MB plan and would like to know the best non brushless size motor to go for.
Plus prop size and type. He said the article stated motor and prop he used, the set up was what the builder
had already got.
Could anyone give any information on the boat power requirements please.

Exactly to plan or scaled up/down? I.e. how big and how heavy?

Ray did mention in his build article that he used a 600 size motor running on 7.4 volts.

Hi Chris, yes he saw that but there are 600 versions from race motors to eco motors bb to turbo.
he is asking what motor would make a nice planning boat.

Hi John,
I'm certainly not a specialist on powerboats but the model is about only about 2ft long and the displacement is only going to be about 2 -2.5 lbs if its anywhere near scale. The recommended prop is 35mm which would indicate about 35mm outrunner brushless (The 600 motors are 36mm diameter). You've probably only enough displacement for a 2S (7.4 volt) Lipo or a 7.2 volt NiMh battery, so possibly about 1300Kv would fit the bill? These are only gut feelings and others would give better input and it also depends how you drive?

I'll ask Ray exactly what he used.

No problem Tony, just glad you took time to give your recommendations, just in case he decides to go brushless.

Cheers John

Been in touch with Ray but unfortunately he can't provide any more information. As said it is a 600 size motor taken from a Kyosho ready-to-run model. He has had a look but the motor doesn't provide any useful information.

He did suggest using the motor as used in the Club 500 race boats which is a 550 FC. I have a Club 500 and they do go well.

Otherwise I can only suggest looking for a high performance 550/600 motor as I tend to use brushless in all my builds.

Chris

Had a look at Component Shop and they do a 540 motor that looks as though it should fit the bill and has the benefit of having a mount included. I usually reckon on around 10k. RPM to give a good planing performance so size the battery accordingly.

Be aware that if searching on the site it is very slow to return results.

I'd almost see how much weight you've got to play with before you chose. Generally, an outrunner brushless/lipo package is going to be lighter by a couple of ounces at least on a like-for-like speed basis. Hence being the default choice for speedboats of most types. the 10K that Chris mentioned would tie in with the 1300Kv on a 2S battery.

Thanks for all our help guys, problem solved. 540 high performance motor being used with a 35mm X type prop.
With a 7.2 battery.

Once again thanks for your help
