Fitting out your average model - shaft oil tube
« on: November 30, 2021, 09:48:51 pm »

Have you ever tried to fit oiling point to a prop shaft that's already in place. Well I had to fit one this morning just a few pictures showing how I managed it. Now with the oiler fitted  the next part of the installation is to fit capacitors on the motor. Many builders struggle with this but with a small motor like this one I find a good soldering iron works fine. Common sense says fit the oiler on the shaft before fitting in the boat. I am fitting out a model that is built with nothing fitted except the prop shaft. {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

Nice neat job. I like the imaginitive use of clamps to hold the oiler pipe in place during soldering.

Nice job Stan,

I've solderd up also in the past but at the risk of grannies and eggs type of thing I try to keep some stock of these type of thing for the cost of them and providing very careful drilling is used they are absolutely fine when fitted and still do / look the part.

I've always used propshaft grease, never considered oil?

...Fairy muff Stan.  Either / or works of course.  It's still surprising when we see some newbies asking but deciding not to bother fitting one as a matter of course -grease or oiled shafts.

I retro fitted an oiler (greaser) to an existing installation once, it was a fiddly and awkward job, but I managed to do it without destroying the model in question. It was early in my boat modelling career and, having learned from my omission, I now fit them during construction. I always make my own prop tubes to suit the model I am building, silver soldering the grease tube in place for additional strength. The retro fit was soft soldered, trying to silver solder it would have resulted in a disastrous fire due to the heat required :D
