Breaking in a new KaCio LS2-13S how long on air?
« on: April 09, 2022, 03:50:07 pm »

I just received my new KaCio LS2-13S twin and it says to break it in before regular use. My Graham's TVR1A-BB says in the manual to run @ 10 PSI for 30 minutes.
Do I do the same for this model. It calls for recommended air pressure 0.2MPa-0.6MPa. Is that the range for regular use or during break-in period. What would it be in PSI? Thanks,
Derek

Bonjour Derek,
For information, 1 bar = 14,5038 PSI  ok2

Personnally, I don't like starting using a steam engine on air, even if you try to lubricate the cylinders with a light oil.

I like starting at about 0,5 bar (+/- 10 PSI) with a lot of oil everywhere, especially steam oil for the cyllnders and I let my machine run on my table for 1/2 hour adding regularly oil on the moving parts.

The oil should become grey, normal, first frictions.

After,I like using my machines at 2 bar (30 PSI) as wet steam is also auto lubricating.

Little example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFyBAtKFvXY

Besides this, this 7,39 cm3 deserves a good boiler, which one do your have ?

As steam machines have a good torque and do not need to run quickly,  I like coupling my 7-8 cm3 to 4 blades 80 mm ( 3") propellers

Re bonjour Derek,

Other detail, on your picture the oiler is against the machine, the RC damper valve should be between to take the benefit of the steam oil  ok2

Basicaly 15psi is approximately 100 kPascals or 0.1 MPascals. So 0.2 MPa is roughly 30psi and 0.6MPa is roughly 90psi. Google is good for this sort of conversion if you want a more accurate value.

Bonjour Raphaël

I was hoping you might respond. I follow you and your channel. Thanks for the advice. My boiler - total height of the boiler is 260mm, the diameter is 85mm, the length is 120mm, the valve pressure is 0.5MPA, and the boiler capacity is 230ML. I also have a Pendle 3.5" Vertical boiler.

Also, thanks for the oiler advice. Nothing is fixed, I just hand tightened it to take the picture., Have P10 control valve (throttle) somewhere between China and Canada. Will make sure I assemble it correctly.

Jim,

Thanks. I did a google search but when it said 0.6MPa is roughly 90psi. And that was the top range, I thought that was way high.
Never seen anyone talk of running a 90 PSI so I thought it best to ask the experts here on the forum.

Cheers

Bonjour,
Just for fun, an exception, when we race the Anton Trophy, we are allowed to go up to 8 bar - 120 PSI !
Here is one example of this 500 meters long race : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gop87_pjNE (I lost this race in particular because of a safety valve which triggered at 8 bar but did not close afterwards  :((  )

Derek, as previosly said, to my opinion a good service pressure is about 2 bar - 30 PSI. To this pressure, with her 7,5 cm3 and her 100 x 160 mm horizontal boiler (900 ml total - 600 ml useful), my launch Liva 1 has an autonomy of about 45 minutes : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk74P2k8W2o (listen to the work of the gas regulator perfectly balanced burner power / machine consumption)

Bonjour Raphaël, Very sweet. Love the sound. Can't wait for the warmer weather here in Canada to get out on the pond for trials. My ultimate goal is to build a steam racer but need many more months maybe years to do that. I am a COVID first time modeler who was trapped in my basement building my first boat the Krick Borkum.

Bonjour Derek,

Based on the opinion of "specialists", a speed steam machine is a bicylinder / single acting 4-5 cm3 one and good friends offered me two home built of them :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZC8hl1FFPE ==> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nO27-FWfZE (not the best hull)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubZbn5o6EfI

In a good hull, you could obtain : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76FCX153mys with such a machine.

My current speed steam boat has a JMC compound : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tpREH2SVi0&t=226s

Even under 8 bar (120 PSI) it is always a lot of fun to race with friends.
