Paula 3 Motor Recommendations
« on: December 28, 2021, 12:55:14 pm »

Hi,

I am about to start building a Ro-Marin (Robbe) Paula 3 and wondered if any one could recommend a suitable motor.

The kit came without a motor but the instructions suggest fitting a Krick Max Power 600 motor. I have been unable to find a vendor for this motor in the UK and the shipping fees incurred from sourcing one from Germany are prohibitively expensive.

The motor will be driving a 35 mm, 30 mm pitch, brass prop rather than the plastic prop supplied with the kit.

I am looking for a motor that will provide a longer running time rather than speed when coupled to a suitable battery.

Any help appreciated.

Kind regards,
Pauli

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Yes, Component Shop have quite an extensive range of motors and from experience they provide really excellent customer service.

Are you able to suggest a specific motor from their range that would meet my requirements?

Kind regards,
Pauli

The ones Martin showed are both ok.
Depending on the voltage of the battery.
6v 540, 12v 555
That would be my choice.

Hi Ned,

Thanks for your reply.

When I originally looked at Martin's reply, I clicked on the link to Component Shops website (motor section) which pretty much resolved to their entire range - my mistake.

I should have clicked on the image that Martin had attached showing the four motors. As I will likely be powering it from a 6v battery the 540 DC motor without mount seems a good choice as confirmed by yourself. The motor is described as being "Noise Attenuated" I wonder how much quieter it is compared to a standard motor?

Anyway, thanks Martin and Ned, unless anyone else has an alternative suggestion then I will probably opt for the 540 DC motor (6-12v) Noise Attenuated.

Kind regards,
Pauli

HI Please find attached the data sheet for 540 N/ A motor. The motor revs at 6.000 at 12 volts at 6 volts maybe 3.000 would you be happy with this?

Noise attenuated probably refers to electrical noise not what we hear, will probably have internal filtering so no need to fit capacitors externaly.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your reply.

I think you are correct - although the term "noise" is ambiguous without clarification and the absence of acoustic noise is a quality that someone might well seek out in selecting a suitable motor for use in a model.

Thanks anyway for pointing that out  :-))

Hi Pauli,

I appreciate it has been a few months since you last posted on this topic, but I am thinking of building a Paula 3 as my next project. Please can I ask if you did use a 540 N/A motor on 6V in your model?

Many thanks

Hi Peter,

Due to other things vying for my time I have not yet started building the Paula 3. I have planned a few modification I intend making to the model and have made an inventory of additional items I need to purchase.

To answer your question I plan to use a:

"540 DC Motor (6-12V) NOISE ATTENUATED MFA motor"

and to power this from a 6V 5Ah Sealed lead-acid SLA battery. Both of these are  available from the excellent "componentshop.co.uk".

Unfortunately, I am unable to provide any feedback on this motor/battery choice, but I may do so when the model is completed.

The Paula 3 although a fairly simple design offers a lot of scope for additional features and should be good fun to build.

Good luck if you select this as your next project.  :-))

Kind regards,

Pauli

Hi Pauli,

Thank you for the information. If I do go ahead with a Paula 3 that is the motor I will choose.

I agree that the scope for additional features makes this a very interesting model.

Thanks and regards
Peter
