Christmas seems a long time ago now, one of the pressies I received was a rather nice box of dark chocolate gingers from Waitrose, (aka 'Britain's Poshest Grocer'). Unusually the box was not cardboard or plastic, but 6mm ply, well constructed, if a little rough around the edges. After consuming the contents, (most important!), I was going to reuse the box for storing drill bits etc. but decided to 'pimp it up' a bit as a little side-project during the grim days of January.
First step was to rub everything down with 220 grit then 400 grit sandpaper. The box rim, exposed ply, was then covered with strips of 1mm obechi veneer. Next 3 coats of antique pine stain were applied, followed by 4 coats of Colron Danish Antique Wood Oil, (much easier to apply than varnish).
A razor saw and warding files were then deployed to add the brass strip detailing. Finally the base was lined with green felt, and hey presto, an 'antique' artisan trinket box!
Hopefully the before and after photos have come out below . . . . . . .
Cheers,
Mike
