I've been wanting to make this little engine for some time...
Ian asked how many tries I would need and the answer is two.
Anyway, I started with a piece of 3" dia, 1" long round bar which was trued up in the lathe. I can't really put photos in line, I might make a few posts to make it easier to follow.

The base of the engine was milled into that and the top lopped off the round bar.

Then the material is placed on its face and milled to the correct depth.  All the relevant holes are made, I have a DRO on the mill which makes this part easy.

While not shown I milled the bottom off at 45deg. on each side of the base.  This is so that the part could be placed in the vice at the correct angle when working on the cylinder mounts.The top is milled off at the correct depth and the cross drillings made.

Then placed flat again and the 45deg. faces milled away to make space for the cross drillings.
The piece rotated and the cross drillings are made.

Now it is placed in its 'bottom' and the face milled down to the correct depths and the cross drillings made for the valve.

This is when I discovered my first 'oopsie'.  The cross drilling for the cylinder was too deep and broke through the bottom. I can only think that I was mixing beer with my pain killers when I did this.
What I did was turn a bit of bronze welding rod down to slightly less than diameter of the hole.  Press down until it protruded through just a little and put a blob of solder on there.  My luck, the solder wicked right through and soldered the rod into the hole.  I had hoped to just run the 1/8" drill down the hole to crop off the rod and all would be good.  I had to reset the piece and re-drill the hole to clear it all out.  Part seems OK.

This is a photo of 'rounding' off the cylinder mounts.  This set up is sketchy AF.   I don't have a LH boring bar and so I used a RH tool and ran the boring hear backwards.  Kids, don't try this at home!

Now the excess material is milled off the aft face and won't you believe my luck!  Another hole drilled too deep, a mirror image of the first one.  Probably should have looked at the drawings better...
This one was repaired in the same manner as the first except that the solder didn't wick up the entire hole.  I drilled the 1/8" cross hole with  a battery drill and it tokk it right out and the excess fell out the top.  Success!

I'll start on the second one and hopefully make less mistakes.  I'll also make about six cylinders as it would be almost exactly the same amount of time as making four.
