Empire Tugs
« on: October 26, 2007, 08:54:36 pm »

Can anyone help me, I am considering converting the Mobile Marine kit Lady Jan to the Empire Fred/Energetic as I have always hankered after a Chatham PAS tug. I have quite a large collection of RN dockyard tugs, but few of the Empires and none of the energetic. If anyone help me with a photo or drawing I would be most obliged.

There is a nice photo at http://www.photoship.co.uk/JAlbum%20Ships/Old%20Ships%20E/slides/Empire%20Fred-01.html

Same photo at http://www.riverman.gotdns.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=-12

Empire Fred is documented with other Aberdeen-built ships at http://www.aberdeenships.com/single.asp?searchFor=empire+fred&index=100601

She was built by A. HALL & Co., Aberdeen and her yard number is given here as 683 (rather than 682 as above).

Another tidbit of history - she served in a WWII convoy between Gibraltar and Oran, 1943 (presumably as an escort):

Convoy KMS.12G

Depart Clyde on 31 March 1943.
Arrive Bone on 15 April 1943.
Hague's records contain 50 merchants and 17 escorts (40 ships TDS)

EMPIRE FRED (Br)   235 1942   GIB TO ORAN

Thanks again for the info, more one looks into the Empire tugs the greater the variety, I remember the old Cervia as a young lad working on the London river and she always looked smart. Just I fancied a steam PAS tug and the old fellas in Chatham used to wax lyrically about the Prompt and the Resolve. I was saying to Shipmate 60, the only noise add ons I would consider is a telegraph and a decent low register steam whistle as being steam the engines barely whisper flat out, except of course if you suddenly stop engines from full power, then the boiler safety valves lift and that is louder than the whistle, I did it once on the St Margerates crossing a separation zone for a crossing ship, it was lunch time and I woke the whole bloody ship up from their after dinner slumbers, I was not popular.

The Cervia was almost identical .         Cervia plans at "My hobby Stores"  £10.    Hope this helps.    Geoff.
