Newbie with question.
« on: February 03, 2022, 11:21:45 am »

Hi all, new to the forum and boats. I am thoroughly enjoying looking through all the threads and posts on the site, the wealth of knowledge some of you guys have is amazing.   I have selected the SLEC Police boat for my very first build project based on it look fairly simple  and I wont have to worry too much about weathering and detail 🤞.

Quick question please, I have done some searching but cant find a definitive answer but would a 5" figure be about right for a skipper? The model is 26" and the original seems to be about 30 foot? Many thanks.. Ray

Yes, or just a touch over. If the model was at 1:12 i.e. 30 inches long then a figure would be about 6 inches tall.

For 26 inches long it's 26÷30×100 which gives 86.66%.  6 ×86.66% is 5.2 inches.

Welcome to the forum.

Chris, many thanks for your reply and info, I half fried my few remaining brain cells arriving at 5" and I really wanted someone to confirm I wasn't wildly off the mark! Thanks again.

Here's a picture of my build. You can see that 5" will be too tall to fit inside the wheelhouse. I would think 4.5 max.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to measure for me, the WPC is fully posable so I'm hoping I can get her sat at the wheel if room allows. I will be very pleased if I can get my boat looking anything close to yours.

Tried and it seems failed to post a photo, will need to look up how it's done....

Thanks for pointing out Deans Marine, just been looking and they have some good figures that would suit if my police lady wont fit.   :-))

This might be useful. The details cover a 1:12 model at Greenwich and looking at it I don't reckon anyone would stand up straight. https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-67590

Thanks for the link, some good photo's for reference in there. My intention is to have a figure sitting at the wheel, looking at the seating shown in the full size and the model my WPC might just squeeze in there. 🤞

Thames poice launch scale
« Reply #10 on: February 05, 2022, 10:26:47 pm »

Hi,

Sorry for intruding.  I've been downloding allsorts of Thames Police launches for ages.  On seeing your post I can't remember what I put into google but it wasn't specific.  I didn't have this image before but hopefully it helps with scale ......as others said and I believe them it's not for sure you could walk-in to the cabin without ducking.  The later boats have much higher cabins so I'd guess you could from all the photos.

Hope this image helps -I just found it simply on google, you can obviously get some kind of scale off it close-enough:

Thanks for looking, I have quite a few photo's of the full size boat now (1960's/70's) and as you say, there's no standing room but a few of the pics do show a policeman sitting at the wheel. Many thanks to all who have helped me on this subject, very much appreciated. 👍

Brilliant footage, no life jackets,  wet hankies for fume protection and lead based paint everywhere I shouldn't wonder! About 3 1/2 minutes into the last link there's an old style boat with 3 police in the cuddy two facing forward a one backward, definitely need to stoop low to get in and out tho.. 👍👍

Have a look on e-bay for the poseable Doctor Who figures. They come in at nominally 5 3/4 inches and there's a pretty fair mix and they'll be relatively cheap.
