Electronic boiler feedpump

Hello together,
Does anyone have experience with the servo driven boiler feedpump from Regner?

Bonjour Ralf,I Am also interested by this pump, and it exists without a servo (15,00 € cheaper) :
https://www.regner-dampftechnik.com/product-page/servo-pumpe-ohne-servoelektronik

I have an equivalent on my "Jan de Sterke" tug and it works fine (with a check valve on the boiler):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNSEWFAm9uk

Please note that it is coupled to a 2 cm3 machine with a small vertical boiler, it will wotk with any steam plant but obviously will not fill a large boiler as fast as my small one, so tests have to be made to learn how long it has to operate and how the level decrease or not.

Bonjour Rhavrane,

if I buy the model without servoelectronic, i will have to buy a switch to turn on the pump via RC, so I think it doesn't matter.
i'm planning with a watertank with 300ml.
A cheddar puffin is sailing for ca 30 to 40 minutes. If I start the pump 10 min after firing up the boiler and pumps 30 min with 9ml/minute, I will be able to sail round about 60 minutes.

Bonjour Ralf,
I don't trusr figures, I trust my tests  ok2
Besides this, it would be great if you could find the coupled pump dedicated to this machine like mine : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPygTu9z8tk
With it, my limit is the gas, then the oil separator : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnkUssS4HMg :-))

I have one and it is very nicely made. But I haven't used it yet in a boat.

Feed rate of Microcosm feed pump
« Reply #5 on: August 04, 2022, 02:23:30 pm »

Hello
Does anyone know, how much water/min (maximum) the electric boiler feedpump by microcosm can feed and how noisy it is? I found several posts about this pump but nothing about feed rate. Thanks!

This can be simply calculated by understanding the volumetric displacement [bore x stroke] x by the input RPM, however all such piston pumps suffer from hysteresis ' >>:-(  being the delay in a suction valve closing at the commencement of the pressure stroke

[one way to understand this is to consider such as the pump design here operating at 200 RPM...which all sounds OK, but we must understand 200 divided by 60 = the suction valve and delivery valve are opening and closing 3.3' times per second]

The shorter the pump stroke, the greater this effect as a % of volume pumped

Why not ask the Manufacturer [Microcosm] to offer comment.......

We note that Regner publish displacement of their servo driven piston pump.......we also hear the sound of these units a mile away  {-)

I have two of the original Microcosm boiler water makeup pumps, [1 x electric motor speed reducer and 1 x bare shaft]  however from day 1, experienced issues

The original design included superbly finished CNC barrel bolt sealing surfaces complete with an 8 x 4 x 0.5 Teflon flat seal.......on test, the barrel bolt on the discharge side weeped with the Teflon flat seal being displaced and as such a factual pulsating test to 3 Bar pressure could not be achieved & the test aborted

To counter this weepage, I substituted RED fiber washers for the Teflon washers........these fiber washers were too hard/stiff, resulting in snapping of the M4 barrel bolt, and only functional when soaked in water for 24 hours, however this I believed to be a poor solution

I understand the latest design of the M5 Microcosm pump has encapsulated o-ring sealed barrel bolts which should certainly resolve the sealing issue

However it is noted that this latest variant has valve poppets with miniature o-rings for the suction and delivery valves over the stainless ball & Teflon seat in the earlier pumps

All of my attempted test results were communicated with Jin, however disappointingly I was never able to resolve an acceptable solution to my issue which was I suggest......defective design

Having said all of this, I needed to perform a hydrostatic test on the boiler so installed a Microcosm hand operated boiler pump and added a wooden surround....the pump works perfectly and is a fixture, not just for the test

The images are........

1. the original Microcosm pump Teflon barrel bolt sealing washer
2. one Microsom pump [electric speed reducer drive] with the RED fibre washer
3. second Microcosm pump [paddle shaft direct drive] with the RED fibre washer
4. the newer Microcosm M5 pump with improved sealing and poppet valves
5. Microcosm hand pump
6. Micrososm decorated pump body

Thanks Derek. I did ask microcosm about feed rate but got no answer. Regner pump is no option because too little rate.

Hi Ralph

I have purchased one of ht Regner servo pumps, I got the one with the servo controls, this means that you can vary the speed of the pump from low rpm to max rpm to keep up with demand. The capacity of this pump is rated at 1/2 litre per hour. Here is a video link to me testing the variable speed.https://youtu.be/y2OMzYdCMPI

Hi the Microcosm pumps vary in their output, it depends which gearbox is supplied with it, its not specified. I have two of the pumps, one operates at 30rpm (1/4 litre per hour), the other at 60 rpm (1/2 litre per hour). This was insufficient for my needs so I swapped the motors and gearboxes to achieve 280 rpm (2.3 litres per hour). I needed the extra capacity to provide enough water to supply steam to two engines.
Here is a link to a thread here on Mayhem that covers the testing of pumps and controls that I undertook.Re: Installing Electronic Controls and Steam Plant in an all metal Bustler Class Tug

Thanks for your comment. I would need some 1.8 litres per hour.

Bonjour,

livesteam, 1,8 litres/heure ? I would kindly suggest you a mechanical coupled pump like this one for such a quantity of water:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqgnnKakl_o and on this example, the bevel gear is a lottle bit tpp small and the pump is too powerful.

Personally, I don't mind if my pumps are not feeding the boiler as fast as the steam is used, it always slows down the drop in water level and increases the autonomy enough for my needs.

Dave, I would like your feed back on the Regner pump as is is handy and small but is it able to feed a 3 bar/45 PSI heated boiler ?

Hi, I have not yet plumbed in the Regner pump and used it to supply a boiler under steam. I have every confidence that it will work, it is rated at 7 Bar - 105psi so more than good enough. Here is a screen shot of the technical information for the Regner servo pump.
I agree that to extend run times the pump does not have to be capable of supplying more water than the steam engine uses. However, if using the pump with automatic boiler controls that monitor the level of the water in the boiler, then, in those circumstances the pumps capacity must exceed the boilers/engines demands for water.
Also agree that it is possible to set up mechanical pumps with a by pass valve and to achieve good results
