Need a Steam Launch
« on: March 05, 2022, 06:29:13 am »

Mayhemmers,

Not sure where to put this. I have a beautiful Monahan Heron Steam Plant and I would like to find a nice Victorian style Steam Launch kit to install it in. Any nice Steam Launch will be good just so the Steam Plant is completely visible. I am not sure I could manage a scratch build at this time so I would prefer a kit if possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Iran Ausley

Evening Iran........

I don't have any suggestion for an open Launch, but absolutely agree, any quality steam plant should be near fully open for all to see O0

It was unfortunate that the Nick Monahan steam works could not continue production {:-{ ...but their Heron is a most attractive steam plant to use

Keep us posted with progress

Iran Ausley,

I am currently building a steam launch from a kit from Will @ Tippecanoe Boats -
Tippecanoe Boats
 4305 Nordum Road
 Everson, Washington 98247

It was designed by Mayhem member Carl Miller- carlfmiller@gmail.com out of Hawaii.
He has built 4 of them to date, improving as he goes.

It is called Stormy45 and if you check out YouTube you will see it in action.

Still snow on the ground here so no sea trails for my boat - but into tinkering with the steam plant placement, hardware bits and which engine to use (M2B, MSM Clyde or TVR1A-BB) all on my bench to play with...

Carl has designed a canopy, which is on my wish list to build - only need to find the time.
Fun build and both Carl and Will very helpful - full videos builds too!

Derek, in basement but a balmy -5 C outside.

Hi Derek W, it has been a while. Yes, the Heron Steam Plant is a gem but finding a nice open steam launch is proving to be quite difficult. I like the reply from Derek(morfa) and I am following up on his suggestion. Derek(m), your model is well done and hopefully your contact(s) can help. Rick, your suggestion for Krick is a good one. Their Steam Launch kits are quite nice. I think they are a bit small for the Heron Steam Plant but thank you for the suggestion.

Thanks for replies,

Iran

Iran,
I have a Krick Borkum with a MSM boiler/Clyde which I love. Not as long as the Stormy 45" more 33" but I like the wide Krick beam.
If you need any help advice, you know where to get me. And thanks Rick - good suggestion
Cheers Derek

Hello Iran:

The Krick open boat hull seem to be the easiest thing to locate as a kit these days...but starting with a fiberglass laid hull may not be too much of a struggle for making a boat.  I do agree that Heron deserves t have a nice platform to show off!
