allen key drivers smller than 1.5mm
« on: March 27, 2022, 09:20:25 pm »

Hi i recently bought a static dive sub which has the magnetic quick release connectors on the control lines. The only trouble is the grub screws are smaller than my smallest driver (1.5mm) , and after one connector came off and the grub screw disapered somewhere on my workshop floor i drilled nd tapped it for a 1.5mm grub. But the rest of the screws are still there holding, and i would like to be able to service them.
So my question is where do i find a decent 1mm allen screw driver ?daz

I had a similar problem years ago.  I took a cheap 1.5mm allen key (the metal wasn't very hard as it was real cheapy) and filed each face to give a tapered end to it.  Not very accurate but the taper gave it enough of a grip to work.

You can get these sets from Ebay. I cannot vouch for the quality however.

Try Chronos or Tracy Tools or Blackgates or Reeves, nemesis

In my experience when you get down to small sizes such as this they generally have slotted grub screws?

Daz.....the real issue here is understanding what is what........

The sample hollow pointed grub screw may measure 1.5mm diameter however the ISO Standard 4026 tables as below confirms the actual thread size for this item as M1.6x 0.35P with an in hex of 0.7240 AF

Manufacturing tolerances at these relatively small sizes makes measurement difficult to understand especially the in-hex size

It appears metric grub screws are manufactured & available as M1.0, M1.2, M1.4, M1.6, M1.7 & M2.0 ...and also in slotted head  O0 ....again, M1.5 diameter grub screws are not listed

I have used a dozen or so M2 x 0.4 HPGS.......the manufacturing tolerance allows for a minimum thread size of 1.87mm diameter and the in-hex is listed as 0.9020, however my M1 driver fits the HPGS just fine so you can see where the measurements confuse the matter  %)

Hi,

I recently bought some small Allen keys (0.7 to 1.27mm) from Ebay. They are branded Arndt. I have only used the 1.27 and 1.19mm keys so far, but they seem fine.
