Fairey Huntsman rebuild.
« on: April 03, 2022, 05:48:43 am »

:-) Hi I have recently come by a ~1190mm oa long model of this boat which makes the scale about 1:8 as the real craft was I believe ~9.5m long.Question is that when I dummy up some cardboard figures they look HUGE and tower above the edge of the windscreen. I am thinking that the bridge deck may not be at the right level so my question is would the bridge deck be below the level of the main deck. Would be interested in that measurement,Other question might be what scale figures have folk used to look right?thankRaynor

Hello again Ray - the 'bridge' (cockpit) floor on my model is about 4 1/2 inches (114.5mm) below the deck level.
I'll confirm measurements later today.

From memory (and I'm lucky enough to have driven a Huntsman 31 once.... :-) ) the cockpit deck is lower than the main decks, but not all that much. My eyeline was above the upper edge of the windscreen when standing to drive, and I'm 6'1", but I surely didn't tower above it.

I think this pic is a Swordsman 33, which isn't that different to a Huntsman 31 and you can see 3 or 4 different deck levels.

Hi Raynor  As your Huntsman is 1:8 scale I would use a 8 3/4" figure and fit the cockpit sole (floor) so that the cockpit combing is around the figures waste height see photo although the cockpit sole has two levels and is higher at the steering position if this helps any.

KitS,  the Fairey in your picture is the smaller Huntsman 28, not a Swordsman.

Hi Ray,

The aft cabin Huntsman 31 in your picture, 'Sou', was my Uncles 1st Fairey.  A really nice bpat according to my parents and rode a swell better than the Swordsman 33, 'Sou Too' that replaced her.
