HMS Severn, in the Tyne - why the camouflage colour?
« on: April 21, 2022, 09:47:46 am »

HMS Severn left the River Tyne yesterday and I have just realised she had a WW2 camouflage style colour on her.
Also, you will note we have that block of flats on its side - in other words - the Cunard cruise ship Queen Victoria - cos to me that what the Queen Victoria looks like - no style these days eh.

Hiya John, hope you're doing okay these days and that's an interesting 'Western Approaches' paint job.
There's plenty information regarding this on 'Forces.net' but nothing found as to why?

Could it be something to do with the Platinum jubilee celebrations?

Hmm, interesting....

They painted the newer River class vessels in cammo scheme and decided it looked so good, they would do the remaining Batch 1's in similar schemes.

Interesting as the colours look nothing like camouflage colours?

I remembered a form af camouflage for naval vessels was to alter the perceived shape or projection of direction.......so the Wiki people offered quite a series of points & text including this one

The royal navy page about it says it's a tribute to the Battle of Atlantic and mentions it's not so important now with modern radar anyway?

Am on my phone so no weblink bit was the first Google hit I found for "HMS Severn camouflage paint" if it's of any interest.

If you think that cruise ship looks bad what about the Virgin ones!
