My take on Deans Marine MFV Tradition . . . . .
« on: April 12, 2022, 03:56:56 pm »

Hi All,

Just posting a couple of pictures of my recently completed model of this Deans Marine kit, after a leisurely multi-year build.
This 1/24th scale kit is of a typical Scottish Seine Net Trawler, probably built around 1966, and one of the last of the big 68 footers built in wood, operating off the North and North-East coasts of Scotland.
I have modified the kit to aim for a typical Seine Net boat from the late 1970’s, (not an actual vessel), moored up in ‘the Gut’ on North Shields Fish Quay, as I was born within walking distance of the Fish Quay. North Shields was, and is, a fishing port on the north bank of the river Tyne estuary on the North East coast of England. The fishing boat registration code for North Shields is ‘SN’. The trawler would have operated in the North Sea, areas Tyne and Dogger.
As I was aiming for a practical working scale model I omitted a lot of the kit’s more fiddly details as I judged that some of the more ‘super-scale’ features might not survive first contact with the car hatchback. But hopefully I’ve captured the essence of this ‘fishing machine’, after all my modelling is all about ‘creating the illusion’, that's my excuse anyway!

Cheers,

Mike

Hiya Mike, that's a canny nice lookin' boat and you're booned to remember loads of the jock fishin' boats that landed the catch doon the Quay - plenty space in the 'Gut' now though.  <:( .

Hope you get real pleasure out of sailing your boat. :-))

Thanks for your kind comments Ray. The model is a reminder of the glory days down on the Fish Quay.

Saw your comment about the incredible SD14 model build. I remember back in the day, (I phrase I use increasingly these days!), on the local BBC North East evening news 'Look North', fronted by Mike Neville, there was always a report, every few weeks it seemed, of an SD14 launch, 'down the ways', from the Austin & Pickersgill yard on the Wear, the boom years!

Cheers,

Mike

That's one neat model you got there, Mike! Looking forward to seeing some pictures of her on the pond  :-) :-))

Many Thanks Dom and Garry,

With life getting in the way it may a little while before there is a first 'bottom wetting' session with an official photographer. Being a fishing boat I may add some additional details in the meantime.

The model is powered by an MFA Torpedo 800 direct drive swinging a 55mm four-blader, I think it maybe a touch over-powered on 12v, so I may try 6v first, I have attached a photo of the 'under the bonnet' details.

Hope you've solved the stability issues on your Calypso Dom, loved your Imara, just stunning work!

Cheers,

Mike

I have just bought a secondhand version of this boat that was built just as a display model, but the owner can't find the plans. It needs motor, battery etc fitting. :-)) Do you still have Dean's plans? If so I would appreciate a photo of them so I can check everything is in its right place.

Cracking model Mike , the only thing that could be slightly different is the net drum on the stern , I would make it taller and bigger in diameter but really that is nit picking from an old trawlerman and there really isn't any reason for you to change it , your boat your rules and you've built a cracker here

Hi Mike, I have never seen a "tabernacle" like the one one your boat. Have any details etc on this item as I would like to know more about it. thank you, nemesis, another Kipper Dip. Born in Shields.

hi there

I know the topic of posting pictures on others' build threads is a bit 'iffy' at this moment in time - but - this one is of the River Tyne looking over to North Shields, towards where the 'old' Tyne products factory used to be.  This is on the Quayside and if you have a look at the fishing vessels which are moored up there, you will see there are one or two which are very similar to the model that you have built.

Hi Nemesis,

Re: The Mast Tabernacle.

The mast tabernacle from the kit was made up from 1.5mm plasticard, and was more suited to a static model, being a touch 'lightweight'. I needed something a bit meatier to hold the mast up on a working model, with the standing rigging for decoration only, (my rigging skills are not what they should be).

I have to confess here that it is actually made up, and loosely, (very loosely!) based on one I saw on a model of the Mountfleet Models kit of the steam drifter 'Danny Boy'.

It is totally scratch built, with the mast socket constructed from 2 lengths of aluminium angle, and the base and cheeks from 2 laminations of 1.5mm plasticard. All the nut and bolt heads are for effect only, and were sourced from a specialist model railway supplier.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Hi Bruce,

Unfortunately I no longer have the plan, but I do have the build manual. As my model was built from one of Deans 'First Run Kits' the manual is 33 A4 sheets in black and white. I am happy to pass it on to you, if you think it would help.

Hi Mike, that would be fantastic. Would it be possible to scan the pages in or are there too many? That will save postage.

Hi Bruce,

My example is one of Deans Marine 'first run' kits, the instructions run to 33 A4 pages stapled, so scanning might be a bit of a stretch. If you PM me with your address I'm more than happy to post the instructions to you. If you need any further help I have photos of various parts of my build.

Hi John,

Yes, I read the topic on posting photos on other threads, but I have no problem as long as the photo is 'on topic', which yours certainly is. A photo of the fish quay from the 'sunny side', it brought back many memories, many thanks.

The red boat is the FR374 now if I have done this right, you can see her at the drift net roughly about 1968/69
