« on: April 14, 2022, 03:17:44 pm »

Saw this on Facebook, beautifully modelled ....

What type of boat is this?
What type of fishing is it used for?
Why two masts?

Montery Clipper, a Fishing Troller.

I believe that a majority of them were operated out of San Francisco, by Italians, after many
Japanese fishermen were interned during WWII.

The boats were also known for the single cylinder Hicks engines.

The masts are actually outrigger arms, they tow 3 sets of Tuna lures per side , still see systems like this in the Spanish/French and Portuguese fishing fleets in the Bay of Biscay

Not two masts, but beams, I think. They would have been lowered into the horizontal position to trail lines or nets behind. Similar to what a European beam trawler would do.

...Hi Martin, I watched this since your original post because I clocked it in seconds but if if I'm not wrong, nobody pointed out if you follow your own facebook link it acutally tells you under the original picture it is a "Monterey Clipper Fishing Boat". Copy and paste job in google and shwing:  Wikipedia is most infiomative...  RCgroups have a number of these modellers of this subject also (Bob Hera springs to mind?).

Hi Rich!

Yes, you're right... doh!

Just fascinated by the two masts, which turn out to be  VERY long outrigger fishing poles.
Once you realise that, you can see that there are six 'reels' that match the brackets on the poles....

Still can't work out how you would retrieve the fish once the poles were in operation, they must be 30 ft horizontally out the side..?

There's a double ring on each line, the line goes out through the outer ring and the inner ring is spliced to a rope so they can haul in the fish without lifting the arms Martin
