Alaskan Crabber 1/32 Design.
« on: April 24, 2022, 07:55:30 pm »

Hi All,

I am a huge fan of deadliest catch. For a while now I have toyed with the idea of building an Alaskan Crabber.
122hrs of Design later, I am close to completion.

The hull will be printed for a plug and a fibreglass hull will be produced. The deck will be laser cut ply with all the crab tanks and lids cut. I’ve got a fully working deck crane drawn up, along with the deck tables and pot launcher.  :)

Looking forward to seeing the first hull out of the mould :)

I know you say it's 1/32, but what sort of dimensions are we talking about here?

Most of these crabbers are between 35-40m in length so over 1m I'd think for the model

About the only thing that looks odd with these crabbers is the draft as these boats are all very shallow draft compared to European boats , the Cornelia Marie is 35m long by 9m beam by 3m draft , a UK crabber of that length would be 11m beam and 5.5/6m draft for the same length ( our 24m boats are all around 9m beam and 5.5m draft as it is )

I’ll get her dimension up but it’s about 1.1m long . I’ve printed it at 1/48 scale as a test at around 900mm long but it was too small for my liking.

I was lucky to obtain a drawing of her hull which I was able to redraw into 3D.
I’ll upload a plan with some dimensions on.

How many pieces did you have to cut the hull into to be able to print it?

I have a large format PLA printer so I can split the Hull in two pieces for 900mm version and 3 for the 1100mm version.

It’s only being used for the plug, so will destroyed after lol

Why 1/32?  1/35 has lots of accessories as does 1/48. And how much ballast will it need? Not a problem for 'Sprites' but could be for us wrinklies.

It was more because I wanted to make items on deck as functional as possible with a realistic amount or realism.

But you do raise a valid point on weight. Once the first hull is in the water I will fill feedback.

Pictures are not visible.... {:-{
I built the FV Cornelia Marie in 1/32 Scale .... made most of the details myself. 1/32 scale shouldn't be a problem....
