Model Boats on TV
« on: April 27, 2022, 11:09:11 pm »

The Yesterday programme "Scouting for Toys" had a recent show that mainly featured a Lego auction but tucked away in the programme was a feature on some RC model boats. The show can still be viewed on UKTV play (episode 4).

The whole series is interesting, some scary prices paid for some things, whereas the model boats all went for no money at all.

It was shocking how low the prices were - each of those models should be worth over £1000, and they went for around 1/3 the price of the kits they were made from.

Probably the key word there is 'kits' Phil!

There were well made, pretty much ready to sail boats built from quality (and recognisable) kits. I'd like to think that there is value in the time put in on the construction, but if there is, it's negative! A great shame.

In the second episode of the series a complete Matchbox car collection from a british collector was sold for over £400,000. It was amazing.

As with all these things, the value is what someone is willing to offer on the day. The amount of work that went into the model is irrelevant really. Just simple supply and demand.

I disagree with Colin.  The item is probably worth what its worth, and that's that.  What it sells for is something entirely different.

...I do agree though, I think far too many people value expense and time as a factor which can't usully be sold-on.  In my opinion  Ebay has destroyed the principles of what things are worth these days but conversely made things somewhat easier to buy and sell.
