Finishing painting and varnishing wood.
« on: May 28, 2022, 11:59:05 am »

Hi all

Could I get some advice. All my previous builds have been either vac formed or plastic. I have just bought the Krick WPS 47 which other than the hull is all wood.

Having never worked with wood before I obviously won’t get away with just spraying paint on from cans. The instructions mention varnishing the underside of the hull and engine Mount etc. not got a problem with that, but what about painted surfaces and what paint is recommend. I would normally use humbrol acrylic sprays, but this is on plastic.

The top half of the boat is mainly white and I have read of a colour change after varnishing. I have bought some Rustins outdoor clear varnish to coat the internals and underside of the deck, could I use this on the rest of the boat before applying the top coat of paint to seal everything.

I do not poses a spray gun so if it’s not aerosols it will have to be hand painted.

Could anyone give me the basic procedure for covering and sealing wood.

Any help appreciated. :-))

Thanks
Alan

Sanding sealer, thin the first coat to get penetration. sand between coats. I always use gloss or enamel paint on wood. What you have to realise that wood is always on the "move", and the paint is formulated to expand and contract. That is why yacht varnish is always specified on wooden boats, hope that helps, nemesis

Hi Nemesis

Thanks for the information. I thought about using Halford spray enamel paint and clear lacquer, but will use sanding sealer.

Thanks again

You could do worse than read the late, great Dave Milbourn's wise words on the Model Boats site.
