That Damen 2810 by Tiver21 on YouTube
« on: June 02, 2022, 07:02:22 pm »

Files are 1:144 scale.
Prints up nicely at 1.5x scale to 1:96 scale.
But there is a "hole" in the tip of the bow that I had to patch.

Took a while to source the right size crown gears.
I finally selected C202A and C152A as good options for inside the pods.
I ended up with a random 15mm crown gear on the top of the drive due to shaft sizing issues, and
having extra of those, cut that interior pinion gear out to and used it inside the pod.
This was all due to using 2.38mm brass rod for shafts.

The motors are 3000rpm N20, but that 3000 rpm is low, luckily they are okay on 12v so should manage around 6000rpm.

This progressed fast.
The files were optimized for a resin printer, so the support structure for
the pilot house looked like I has printed a brick. Breaking the support
structure away also broke the mullions for the pilot house windows.

No worries though, I know how to build models.  %)

A spot of paint cleans everything up.  :-)

I understand the Damen 2810 to be 28.67m long so the files are for a model 200mm and yours is 300mm?
Knowing very little about 3D printing, but knowing a little about your high modelling standards, I am watching this with interest.

You have the sizes right. I am  building 1/96 scale so that I can bully a friends battleship.
I did get the tug wet, and it needs a bit more power. I will try running the model on 12 volts and
see how that goes. I may need to change the propellers. I have also reprinted the deck house using
light weight PLA, that took off 14 grams so maybe the battery won't sink the model.
Now that I am detailing, I am thinking how to hinge the mast and about lights... Oh no weight...  %)

Ah, Something I skipped over, the 1/96 scale fendering was done for another modeler, Eric, for
his shapeways kit. The master parts were all turned on the lathe, and then molded so I could
produce the soft rubber parts. There were some tiny tires also.
For the Damen 2810, I will also be using some tiny 2.5mm "D" fendering I made for an Offshore PSV.

The safety rails are about 11 mm tall.  :o

The railings are done, and I have a good start on the mast.

Mast mostly done up. Still wondering if I should do lighting, and
pick up a smaller battery to lose more weight.

A little styrene light box a little leds, solder switch...
I guess there is no going back.  %)

Putting in tiny windows.  %)

over the front wind screen are 5mm LED ground down to look like deck lamps.
Mast is in paint, and waiting more tiny LED.

The power is much better on 12 volts, but I think new propellers. And a ballast shift to stern.
Also, the power is very scale, in that this little tug had to work to move the battleship.
Rick let his ship drift off the dock, and it probably too the little tug a half hour to bring it back.  {-)
It was only about three ship lengths, battleship lengths, about 9 meters.  %)

Drew up and printed some little mast lamps.  :-)
I picked up some SMD Led, and they were so tiny, I thought, "not today..."  {-)

6mm > 5mm > 3.5mm printed housing for those odd, 2mm LED.
I will probably use some clear Tamiya paints to enhance lens colors.

Got the lamps all in place, but bunged up the paint on them a little while
getting the soldering done. They are all light-able, but the little button
batteries I installed inside the deck house don't like more than a few
hours of running. And I ran them down playing with Rick's BB.

I am thinking that it isn't a model I may run too often at night, so
perhaps I will leave it at just running lamps and deck lamps. Just to
give the batteries a chance at life.  %) That red is really happy.

Okay fresh batteries, and full lights.  :-)
Not that this little tug will ever be towing at night. %)

Lighting is finished, and I was looking at how to add the fire monitors and
couldn't find a little 45° bend for the piping. Then realized, I am 3d printing this
model, and I could 3d print some pipes. So sketched that out and a fire monitor.
Then I remembered that a friend, Kazu Morizou, and created some tiny pumps, and sent me a couple.  O0

After thinking and looking for a day, I finally found the little box of pumps. And this
quick featureless tug build is getting a new element worked in...  %) Now I have to
work out how to add a working fire monitor and keep the deck house removable...
Maybe just one working and... {:-{

While waiting for a switch for the little pump, I tried drawing up a life raft barrel and pilot house steps.
Well, at least the pilot house stoop, and hatch. I suppose I could have drawn the steps, but the idea
of cleaning up supports for those little steps didn't sound like fun.
.
There are things in CAD and 3d printing that don't translate well for me. Support layout is one of them.
The other thing is layering. The hatch seems to pop out well, hinges okay... But on the life raft tub, a
wood or plastic dowel with strips wrapped around it to create seams is straight forward. Deciding how
thick and wide to make those strips in CAD, and hoping they print out clear and not muddy still feels like guess work.
It all looks so good on the computer...

I reprinted the life raft tubs with mounts. That's a support nightmare.  :o
It makes them a bit lumpy and I broke a leg, but replaced that with square styrene stock.
During clean up I broke one of the drop arms. I should probably mix a bit more flexible resin into
the standard resin to moderate the brittleness. Might make clean up a little easier.
.
Fire monitors, pilot house stairs, and life raft tub in place.  :-)

Right, it has been proven that the little tiny water pump is over powered.
And the rest is just silly...  %)

So I customized and reprinted the motor mounts, and dropped in a
22k rpm motor. This should get about 5600 rpm to the propeller. ...Nice  8)
Well I wish I had more photos, but I was too busy laughing last Saturday.
The tug ran well, plenty of power now. I pulled into a little boat slip that someone
had at the pond, and as I was reversing out, I thought, with the new motors, I
want to take out some of the stern weight. So as I backed out of the slip, I turned to
bring the tug around, and slightly wedged it in the foam bumpers on either side of the slip.
So I turned the drives to push the stern out and goosed the throttle and spun the boat
upside down on the center axis.  O0 {-) {-)

We recovered the boat, drained the water, took some lead out of the stern and went back into the pond.
I did some quick runs up and down the bank to see if I was getting any water up through the shaft or rudders,
and also checked for any heat on the motors. You can see I was a bit concerned, by the heat sinks I milled down and
applied to the motors. Not really any heat, so I was proceeding with the speed runs, when a small rc skiff came
down along the bank. As I was turning around to set up for my next run, the fishing pole and line hanging out
the starboard side of the skiff raked my little tug broadside, flipped it over, hooked the deck house railings and
proceeded to drag the superstructure off the deck. I told him to turn to shore and pull the superstructure back to
shore, but the drag forced his skiff into anti-clockwise circles. Every time he came round, I said, "No, This way..."  %)
When I was through joking and laughing, I doffed my shoes and socks and waded in to put a stop to the comedy.
The motors were definitely not hot...  {-) Sorry I didn't get photos or video.  :P

Back up to Seattle to show...  :-)
It runs much better with the larger motors.

These, "Well, I'll just invent it as I go" builds can be a lot of fun.

Finally got the little mist maker humidifier circuit.
It works, but is really only visible in special lighting conditions.  %)

I tried drawing up a small water basin, to fit the piezo disc and wick, but
it need more air pressure to move through the small brass pipes. So I drew
up a quick fan add on to make it work a bit better.
