Project X or Similar-- Need plans for new boat
« on: June 10, 2022, 12:15:17 am »

I am intrigued by the Martin Baylis and Howe Project X.  Is anyone aware of any hull plans that would make a launch sort of like this? I have inquired at MB&H if they would sell the hull alone, but am preparing for negative.  I didn't ask about plans for the hull. (But I will if they say no hull sale.)

Here is the website for this beauty

http://www.model-steam-boats.co.uk/project%20x.html

My own Cecilia is sort of like this, but why build another?

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks Rafael, that's wonderful to see. Sorry no way to afford his kit.  (Yikes!)  But I just might be able to make a similar hull if I had the sections drawings.  I would make a little change somehow-- Project X in the video looks a little bit down by the head. (and a little tippy maybe?)

Fun to think about a new and somewhat different boat. I Have TVR1A to power it.

Carl,
I made an electric variant of the Project X and the build log is here.

This might give you some insight.

Good luck,

Hello Jim

Yes this is helpful and congratulations on the fine work.  I haven't heard from the contact I made from the MBH website.  Can you share the correct address to get in touch as you did? Maybe too long ago, but maybe not. I am inquiring about a stripped down hull-only kit, and it would be helpful to have the bulkheads as well. I have just started reading your posts, and will continue tomorrow. Vicarious fun! And terrific instruction.

Thanks again

Carl......the current ownership is Martin Bayless, ...[son of one of the original Principals].....

So Martin Bayless Engineering is the current manufacturer.....

His WEB site confirms the contact details, plus full details of the Company builds etc

It would seem that JoTika have acquired the rights to and are working to re-introduce at least three of the old Marten Howes and Baylis kits .    Namely the River Launch TOPAZ,  the Customs Cutter VIGILANT and the Lake Steamer Der SeeKadett.        http://www.jotika-ltd.com/Pages/1024768/MHB_2.htm. . No time frame given for production but anyone interested in them an enquiry to     https://shipwrightshop.com/contents/en-uk/d232_Contact-Details.html  would perhaps encourage them to expedite the production

Brian Marten responded to my query about buying a Project X hull--which he would be willing to do-- and he went to the trouble of finding out what the shipping to Hawaii cost would be-- and unfortunately FedX bumped me out of price range. He doesn't have a lines drawing I could use, so I am still looking for an interesting boat to build. Or maybe we design it ourselves...  ideas??

Thanks,

Carl

Hi,
I wrote to Jotika and asked for a Topaz kit
Yesterday I got the answer: There are no kits available and won't be available.
Britney Marten is currently designing a new Topaz kit approximately 187cmx 22cm.
He hopes to have the prototype finished and production of the new kit by the end of the year.

Best wishes
Ralf

Did they give any indication if the other M.H&B  models (customs Cutter Vigilant .. Lake Steamer Der SeeKadett ) were on the same time line schedule  ??

I realise this may be a bit "off the wall" but there are several original builders plans for open steam launches in the old Service Historique plans on here http://dreadnoughtproject.org/French%20Warship%20Plans/

This is the sort of thing. I built one of the spar torpedo boats and the lines are very fine so just using them as a pattern for the hull could work......well it's an idea %)

Bonjour Ralf,
Thank you for this useful information.

You mention 187 x 20 cm, who has a large car or even room enoughto move and store such a long hull {:-{  ?

Furthermore 22 cm is quite not enough to my opinion, I have a 140 cm hull having approximately the same width and she hardly navigates, she (rock'n) rolls : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUAxt7VjHlk

After this test, I replaced the copper chemney by a bottle of soda  :-))

Thanks for the torpedo boat idea Tony-- very pretty and certainly different. I agree with Rafael it would be very tippy (like the boat in his video) , esp. in my new boat which will use a 3" vertical boiler.  Your other idea for the gunboat is intriguing and I think would have a menacing appearance! Still looking...
