Returning Boater
« on: July 01, 2022, 10:32:26 pm »

Good evening all,
I have'nt been modelling for a while and while recently clearing out some "clutter" I have come across my old MFA Seahawk.
It is an old fiberglass deep V hull with what I believe is called an out-rigger, where the prop turns with the rudder.
After many years of neglect it's looking a little sorry for itself, and I have decided to "do her up" so to speak.

When last out she was running on an MFA 850 Torpedo brushed motor and a 12v 7a battery, and not at all exciting and a bit of a let down to be perfectly honest so was stuffed into a corner of the attic and forgotten about.

I was wondering if a brushless motor and lipo batteries might liven her up but I would only have an entry level knowledge of this sort of thing, would anyone be able to suggest a setup that might add a bit of sparkle.

I can post a photo when I figure out how.

Thanks in advance,

Dessie.

Hi Dessie

Correct me if I'm wrong but "outrigger" usually means a hydroplane type craft, usually a very slim centre hull, not always but usually with two outer sponsors at the bow.  Your MFA is not an outrigger, especially with a deep vee and checking pics on Google.  I leave it to better knowledgeable to advise you from now.

Pictures are very easy. Reduce them to size and use the attachment button at the bottom of new posts.  I'm not sure if new users are still limited untill 10 posts or so though.

This though?

Sorry, i tried to post a photo there.

Anyway, I have been reading other posts on here about other similar sized boats ( old Precedent 48" Huntsman) power recommendations and wondered if a 5055 700kv motor with a 60amp ESC as I have one (without reverse) would be sufficient to replace the 850?

Haven't a clue about the battery yet. I was going by the recommended set-up of a Ripmax Quantum 2 ( which I already have) to get the same output as a .55 i/c engine, although it does mention a 5s 4500.

I'm sure the prop is a 50mm GRP that came with the kit.

thanks in advance,

Hi Dessie

That motor would work OK, if the ESC handles 4S(14.8 volts)Lipo batteries which gives you about 10360 rpm unloaded.
A 5800mah battery is about 500 grams.

If the ESC handles 6S(22.5 volts) that's about 15780rpm unloaded.

Great looking boat !!!!

Thanks cacabus and jaymac.
The ESC I have is rated 2-6s, but I don’t like running to the extreme so I might go 5s as the box for the motor suggests. I just needed some reassurance LOL.

Another issue with this boat is it has a rubber edge glued to the fibreglass, which has come undone, I used bathroom silicone to stick it the first time, should I use something else?

Thanks in advance,

Well after a few cuts and bruises, and more swearing than was probably necessary, I managed to get the 850 motor out of the boat today. The mount for the offending article needs a little work to take the brushless motor though.
But, onwards we trundle.
Would the brass/plastic coupler be up to the increased might of the brushless motor, or is it worth getting a one piece job?

Thanks in advance,

Update:
So the B/L motor is now in the 850 mount, but I seem to have a problem getting a coupling to fit the 8mm output shaft of the new motor. Is there a coupling to fit such a shaft or must I modify a suitable candidate?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Dessie

The plastic coupling will not take the power, so new coupling is required.

Thanks Canabus, I haven’t been able to locate one yet with the 8mm end necessary for the motor, but I’ll keep looking.

Cheers,

Hi - ModelBoatBits do a Powerflex coupling (which I use) which is available in 8mm.

Hi all, just a quick update.

I have ordered a few different couplings from the internet and awaiting delivery at the moment so work on the model has stalled.

The boat has a rubber edge which is stuck to the edge of the fibreglass hull and is not exactly secure using the bathroom sealant suggested in the instructions, any ideas on improving how this is held on?

Thanks.

So would a Ripmax Quantum 36 replace the 850?
