torpedo boat VOLKSMARINE
« on: July 09, 2022, 02:34:50 pm »

Hello everyone, I begin a new project a torpedo boat from VOLKSMARINE (DDR) during Cold War (5 crewmen). I bought the hull and the deck from a German craftsman. the hull is made of fiber and is 1.26 m long (126 cm).  but I hace a question about the diameter of the shaft. Can you tell me what the impact is of an M4, M5, or M6 diameter? So far I have always used M4 but I wonder if with the length of the shaft there is no more risk of vibration with M4? That’s why I wonder if M5 is not a good idea. For the moment,  I do not yet know which engine will be installed but without being an off-shore it's a very fast boat. Thank you for your help.

Hi guib16;
You are going to build a large model boat for MTB, aren't you!!?
As for the screw shaft diameter, I have used a 4.5mm dia for my 1m class cabin cruiser Jupiter F-99 originally designed
for nitro-engine.
In my case,I once used 2-stroke 060 nitro engine, but changed it to brushless motor version now in service.
The screw shaft is kit-furnished,therefore I don't know why this size is. This boat is single screw driven.
Anyhow, this boat has beeen running very well both with a nitro-engine and a brushless motor. :-))

Is the stern weapon a twin 14.5mm or ZU23-2 cannon?

Derek
yes, torpedos were fired from the back of the boat and goes forward. I suppose, the boat must turn quickly after firing torpedoes !!

4mm shafts should be fine as long as they are perfectly straight.  I have some 4mm shafts with 5-6 inches exposed between the stuffing tubes and A-frames, no vibrational issues.

Hi, I'm sure I have seen a good build of this boat on rcgroups over the last year or two.  I can't find a link at the moment but that build info I'd imagine is a good source of info for a working model?

Hope that pointer helps.

Hi guib16:
The prop shaft I am using in this Jupiter F-99 is 4.5mm diameter stainless steel rod which is so rigid enough. :-))
1;4.5mm spare rod I bought 44 years ago together with the Jupiter F-99 boat kit, ready for emergency. O0
The length is around 40cm.
2;Brass rod is 3.17mm screw shaft for my Lindberg 1/32 PT-109 under construction.
3;The screw is 46mm diameter now in service for electric Jupiter F-99.
