I remember being evacuated in 1944, probably end of May, mystery journey with my mum and ended up in Wath-on-Dern, Yorkshire, a mining village. I can't say it was a good time as I was not quite 6 and my mother had my 18 month old brother to look after as well, and in one room and although they did their best it was difficult as they had 3 girls in a terrace house.
I never understood a word anyone said except the youngest daughter who was maybe 8 or 9. She was nice to me. We all got in line in the playground at the school marched in but I do not remember any lessons and the 4 of us boy evacuees wandered the fields and woods in school time and no one came to find us.
My mother must have told my father, he had just come out of the army as she went back home into London and my father came to collect me a day or so later. He had been called back in to the army as he had left, having done 22 years already and come out as a sergeant major, he was back training the new men from scratch teaching marching and shooting. He was in the Royal Artillery. So we were away for just 6 weeks as far as I remember.
I do recall on this very day (well it is my birthday) in 1944 watching a V1 bomb fly by overhead, never forgot the thrumm noise of the engine.
Later in September I returned to school and resumed being a 'good boy'!!
