Johnson 683 (600) type what Mtroniks esc
« on: July 23, 2022, 09:06:05 pm »

I have two Johnson 683 (600 type) motors in a boat and was wondering what  Mtroniks marine esc would be suitable. I have a Mtroniks viper marine 15 in my armoury but dont know if it would be man enough. This model ship would not be tearing around the pond only cruising slowly.

They are unfortunately 'tearing round the lake' motors! To get anything like scale performance I would suggest a 6v power supply, a Quicrun 1060 speed control and some shallow pitch three blade props like the Graupner 35mm ones. Or a different motor!

I forgot to mention that the ship is a 56 1/2" model of HMS Kent WW1. I just want to sail at scale speed

Would 400 type motors be better?

Nope, fast ones again I'm afraid. I would suggest the following; 6v or 7.2v, MFA 457RE540/1 motors, the 15 amp vipers or Quicrun 1060s should be fine for those. Possibly 457RE385 motors as an option, these are five pole versions of the three pole 400 series motors, but will struggle with props above 40mm diameter.
12v; MFA 347RE540LN, these are 600 can size five pole motors (I think!), nice and low current, low rpm at the higher voltages. They should just about manage with the same Viper speed controls but you will be running at their upper limits so may run hot. The Quicrun 880 has twin outputs for a pair of motors and is rated up to 14.4v, but will need a re-programme for boat operation.
