What could be more pleasant than towing yourself?
« on: September 13, 2022, 07:09:10 pm »

Bonjour,

The Rhine steam tug Moulay-Idris is equipped with a Reeves Warrior MK3 machine, an all-bronze copy of the Stuart D10, so it is 21 cm3 and develops a power of about 1/2 horsepower. Its 4.5" propeller, or 114 mm, allows it to pull real boats like this one. A faulty whistle valve disturbs the sound and loses steam, fortunately not enough to interfere too much with its work. Piloting is made tricky because the attachment point is at the rear of the model, unlike the real one, which is in the centre.

Great to see a model engine working so hard, doing what it's meant to do. 👍
.... even if the whistle was stuck!  😁

Bonjour,
Happy to see such a towing  :-))
Which steam plant is installed in this boat ? Is it an "Abeille" class tug ?

Another one but with my tugboat JAN (Stuart D10) :

Bonjour,
What a beautiful beast  :-))
This boat is now 63 years old, the video is 12, do you have any idea what happened to her?
For fun a gentle ride offered to a friend with my Stuart D10 "Jan" tugboat https://youtu.be/wmxepI3cwOc  because I sank her having been too fast with her: https://youtu.be/g-R29YkaoWI

Greetings,
The first clip was very nice to see.
Second clip poor tug boat, Good to see the internals but would have been better if not capsized, is the moulay okay now?

Sadly i do not know if the Old tug is still going it’s in the USA, I stumbled on to the clip via Facebook.
It might be worth leaving a message on the channel asking if it’s still in operation or perhaps it’s been retired?

Bonjour,
Hopefully, Jan just lost its servos, not waterproof. I played with her a few years later :  https://youtu.be/Uk6KOFAzD18

This is was a bad experience, I didn't pay much for it and I learnt that it sometimes also happens to real tugs.
My Stuart D10 are quite powerful but I also discovered that a 5 cc AL5 may also be impressive : https://youtu.be/9hN4i6FjPfw  :-))

Raphael........all good with the powerful D10 doing the towing

The reason for the Tug's initial switch from side to side is the towing hitch point location you have at the very stern

With the real Tug hitch point is far closer toward the bow........just aft of the deck housing over the engine room  O0

Far greater control of the load being towed, and directional smoothness of the Tug itself  :-))

There is a message in the comments of that video about it, written by the maker of that video...

Apparently the builder of the tug passed away a few years ago, and the family gifted the boat to the video maker.
About 3 months ago he reported the boat still fully functional.

Raphaël, would I be mistaken, if I say that this boat also is equipped with a full condenser? Reason for asking is that I do not see the plume above the boat change if the machine is stopped or reversed, and the stam plume visible anyway is rather small for a Stuart D10 or equivalent.

Bonjour 1967Brutus,

You are right, the D10 is a great steam consumer however, under a pressure of about 1,5 bar / 22 PSI it does not smoke so much and I guess that my large oil separator combined to a straight final exhaust pipe and a warm temperature hides the steam.

To see steam, my friend Alex offered me several little diffusers and you can see the result as an example on a 7,5 cm3 machine : https://youtu.be/9T7p-3tcrg8  :-))
