Dipping a toe in
« on: September 16, 2022, 07:53:32 pm »

Hello all,
After very many years of flying model planes, I’ve decided to step outside my comfort zone and build a boat (or 2).
Starting off with a club 500 model as a quick way to get me on the water, then making a model of a pilot vessel as my Dad was a river pilot.
So I’ll be looking fir advice on a frequent basis.
I’m currently a self-employed model builder but working with an established company in the grim NE where we make very large bespoke RC aircraft powered by fairly large engines, one of our current projects is a 1/3 scale Mk1 Spitfire for an American customer which is using a 250cc engine.

Hi,

Think I found your website. If you can do what I saw I think you'll have no problem switching to something that gets wet!  I just love Pilot boats so very keen to watch a good new build, pretty sure you'll put my 3 Pilot builds to shame but waiting in anticipation.  Have you a boat in mind?

Hello matey, The pilots boats I’m looking at were in service on the River Forth in the mid 70’s and early ‘80’s….Leopard, Lynx etc I’ve been in touch with the Forth Pilots Assoc for further details and and continuing my enquiries, I just want to build one at approx 48” length if there’s a suitable plan for it which I can scale up or down appropriately.

A friend of mine at high school age had a Father who was a Pilot in the firth.  That doesn't help you much because he was probably still a master mariner in the 80's and I've not seen that person for 25 years or more!

Were you on the old RCMF forum, you made a video of going flying and leaving your transmitter behind on the drive, ha ha :-))

That’s not me holding the wing… usually I’m up to my sticky elbows working with carbon and glass fibre, making cowls and spinners etc

I'm really sorry, I just can't remember his name.  If I said he was tall, jet black-hair and called "Dave" that sounds just a bit too generic!  It was probably closer to 30 years ago now and admittedley I only met him a couple of times, it was just before my serious interest in Naval Architecture took-off.  I've been googling the boats though and they look interesting prototypes.

Bit late, but only just seen this. I remember the name Bustergrunt from the RCMF forum.

If you're in any doubt, I am using the same user name here as I did on RCMF. After many years in Finland, I've been back in the UK for the last ten years, dabbled a bit with flying models but am now just messing about with (little) boats.

Regards to Phil, met him in the flesh at a warbirds fly-in in Trondheim in 2007, also once or twice at events back here.

Further to the original post….we’ve had a bit of a traumatic time of late.
Whilst charging s lipo battery for my club 500, the battery exploded and gutted my garage with damage to the attached house, so we’ve been in hotels and rented accomm for the past 3 or 4 months.
All modelling gear and tools gone….

Sorry to hear about the damage - makes me think twice about going LiPo, still on NiMH at the moment. Only place I can charge batteries is in the house. Hope you get back home soon.

Good to 'see' you again, when RCMF folded, I lost a lot of contacts I had known for years.

Yes I lost contact with lots of people too, however one contact on that site, Phil Clark (P51P47) ended up being the chap who hires my services now with his ‘Fighteraces’ business, so now I’m building models for him and his customers as well as myself
