Revell and Airfix Mayflower
« on: September 25, 2022, 07:11:30 pm »

Hi all going through my stash I've discovered I have these two kits of the same subject so I thought I would build them both at the same time so we can all see the differences between them.

First thing you can see is the colours are different on both of them.

I have no idea which is right  (if either) but I don't really care I will paint them both as per instructions.
The dark brown is the revell kit

The whiter coloured sails are the revell ones.
At first glance the revell kit is the better detailed of them.

An interesting comparison and some obvious differences between the two even at first glance.
It'll be good to see how things compare as you progress - looking forward to it...

I don't know about the color difference but it would be funny if the different details are both right; one for the original Mayflower & one for the replica.

And perhaps of interest, https://www.mysticseaport.org/category/mayflower-ii-restoration/

If the original timbers on the actual boat were untreated, and to a lesser degree if treated, would have changed colour a lot over the period of a voyage, due to weathering and ageing.

Hmm, could it be possible to build the 2 models each with half the parts from the other maker, thereby having Mayflowers from Airvell and Refix. :}
That would be a novelty for sure.
Whether it would be a desirable novelty might be less sure.
(yes, this is the kind of though which can happen at a quarter past 1am local time)

Airfix Mayflower is a far cry from their original two bob kit.  O0

OK so far the Revell kit is far and away the better fitting kit, the Airfix kit is lucky it's not taken an unscheduled flight across the room.
Airfix kit.

Revell kit.

So far Revell is wining.

Don't know what the latest Airfix renditions are like but ejection times for mouldings were too quick in the past. Tamiya certainly showed a vast improvement and raised the bar for many when they first appeared. Revell also had its moments in the past.
