Cracker Box quarter scale from BAE plans
« on: October 12, 2022, 04:36:06 pm »

It is many years since I last made a model boat. I have always liked the Riva style of boats, and after seeing one recently, rekindle my interest in model boats.
I wanted to make something a little different, with lots of scale detail, bling, and quarter scale (I have a quarter-scale car and motorbike). It also has to work and run well (read fast)!
After much research, I settled on the Cracker Box, which gives a lot of scope for customization since no two are made alike.

Oh yes, this is going to be fun!  Quarter scale will give a huge model, and building will, I guess, have more in common with the full size boat than smaller models.  Looking forwards to this very much.  :-)) :-))

Lovely looking boats and certainly some work in them. Would like to see your bike and car.

I raced quarter scale cars for many years - nice size for an r/c speedboat too  :-))

Wow...  That's going to be interesting..!  So am I right that full size is about 15/16 feet...?  So 1/4 scale will be around 4 feet..?  As you say, plenty of scope for personalising the build.  Will follow with interest.

Best regards
David.

Thanks for all your comments.
Length is 115cm.
There is a link at the bottom of my post to the stuff I have made - it needs updating though.
I have been following your build David as well. I intend to add a sound system and a quarter-scale V8 engine as well.
Be posting some pics of the bits I have got together so far.
At the moment I'm scanning the plans from BAE so I can laser-cut everything. I especially bought a laser for my CNC for this project - just about cuts 6mm ply in one pass.

Best
Tom

Hi Tom

Look forward to seeing how you approach the sound system, mine is the limit of my electronics capability...  I know it can be improved.  Love the CNC laser, I've been looking at them....  Haven't dared push the 'buy' button yet...  Which do you have..?

So is that a 'real' V8 IC engine you're talking about..?

And as for verification, I think it's just for the first few posts...  maybe 10 or so...  Then you're 'trusted' (and not a bot...)

David.

Nice - I will probably buy some of BAE fittings, like the rear steering mechanism I'm looking to do something similar. Did you make it yourself, and what about the small pulley wheels?
Do you know a good source of quarter-scale fittings?

Was considering a working IC V8 like this - https://www.stirlingkit.com/collections/best-seller/products/enjomor-v8-g52-v8-working-scale-model-engine-gas-78cc-dohc-4-stroke-water-cooled
Its a lot of money though, maybe the next model.
I'm using a 1:4 scale V8 that will cover the electric motor.

Wow. That 78cc V8 is a beast. But as you say, it's quite a price. I'd seen this V8. But smaller at 28cc.

I guess you'd also be restricted where you could run such an engine these days too.
Out of interest. Which inrunner is that..? Any aim point in mind for the weight of the boat..?
Best regards
David.

I used my laser to cut out all the formers, first I had to import the scanned images into Acad and trace the outlines.

Cracker box is built upside down on a flat surface. I super glued the formers to a ridged board marked out with former positions and centerline. Dry-fitted the keel etc and used super glue to hold everything together.
