Servo to radar motor
« on: January 17, 2007, 09:16:38 am »

Is it possible to reconstruct a servo to power a radar motor? Any ideas or suggestions out there ?.

Hi all, I have found that a stripped down servomotor with gearbox runs quite nicely on 1.5 volts, connected direct to the motor.  Using a non working one with electronics u/s is a good way to recycle it and its cheap!

never mind all that machining or buying specialist motors i opened up a standard hitec servo cut and filed down the lug on the plastic cog (stopper) and put it back together glued a piece of plastic tube on the end to take the radar mast ,connected the servo to a spare Chanel on my Rx (ch7 a variable on my TX)and away you go .In my setup i can vary the speed and direction

Portside II's recipe is good, but it will work better if the underside of the output gear is drilled out or has the connector removed so it no longer drives the position sensing pot.  You then have the option of using the existing electronics as a speed control and plugging into a spare channel, or just connecting the motor to a supply of your choice to give the required speed.

Thanks to all who responded to my question, I am now putting the suggestions into practice starting with Roycv's. Thanks again.

Hi all, Sorry to drag an old chestnut out of the fire but I have stripped down an old servo to use as a radar drive, connected two wires to the motor and what ever I do the rotation is always anti clockwise and it is very noisy. :embarrassed: Any suggestions to correct/improve it will be gratefully received.  O0 Graham

Just reverse the polarity to the motor.
Pack the gears with grease.

Hi Martin, Yes I tried the polarity reverse bit but it did not seem to work. I will have another go tomorrow morning when the paint has dried on the mast thing that supports the rotor thing that goes round and which I also had to rebuild to get the drive shaft up from below decks.  Perhaps I have to completely disconnect the motor from the board.mmm :-\ Looking forward to getting the good old grease gun out. I don't think its been used since the Morris Minor fell apart.Cheers Graham.

Yes remove all the electronics and run the wires direct to the motor, use a single 1.5 volt battery and you get scale rotation for most boats. Then change the polarity to give you the direction of rotation you need.

Thanks guys by uncoupling the motor completely from the electronics it was possible to reverse the motor rotation by reversing the polarity of the supply voltage as expected. The grease gun still had some grease in it and was used to pack the gearbox with grease which in addition to quieting the gears also slowed the motor down. So with the addition of a resistor it now runs off the 6 volts used for the lights etc at a reasonable speed. All that remains is the final coat of paint on the mast and rotor.  O0  Cheers Graham
