Window frame rims
« on: October 15, 2022, 02:55:56 am »

For a 1/32 tug boat I want to model the projecting rims of the window frames. I'll probably get the surrounding area with the round-cornered window cut-outs laser cut in 1mm ply. Then I'm considering 3D resin printing the projecting rim of the frame although it would probably be fragile until gued in place. Otherwise a band of say 1 x 5 mm plastic heat rounded at the corners, and fitted inside the cut-out, might be able to look OK.

How would you do it?

Draw up a frame, print it, and push it out from the inside...
Something like the photo of frames I built up, but it just needs to be a right angle profile.
Maybe with a ledge out front to catch the clear window glazing.

Perfect!  Yes, I'd thought an internal flange would give strength and permit exact level of protrusion. And another wee flange to catch the glazing sounds smart. I'm resin printing which gives VERY fine detail although the product is more brittle than with extrusion printing.

While I haven't tried it yet myself, some add flexible resin to the basic resin to make the finished print less brittle. I do have a bottle of Sirya Tech Build resin to try out, this is suppposed to be able to be drilled and tapped so should be less brittle than standard resins.

I've resin 3D printed a window frame with a rim plus an inward-pointing flange. Due to the flange creating an overhang if the whole frame was printed as a single unit I split it in two mid-way down the front of the window and re-joined later. Frame is about 40 x 40 mm and 3mm thick in section. Glazing is cut/sanded from CD case.
