Montana Spray cans
« on: November 17, 2022, 01:59:25 pm »

Hi guys!

I know for most people the "go-to" spray can of choice is Halfords. But I've been doing some searching around & i came across a brand called Montana (link below).

It was originally designed as a "Graffiti" spray. So its hard wearing/weatherproof & very good quality. Its also much better value than the halfords brand as you get 400ml for £5.25 unlike halfords which is around £10 for 300ml! The reason why Halfords cans are quite pricey is as most of us already know, they are colour coded for exact match of vehicles etc. But for us modellers we don't need to pay a premium for this feature!

If you have ever been to Hobbycraft they sell this in there, but its VERY expensive from there & only have a small selection of colours (around £11 a tin!) the link below is where i ordered mine from, great service, fast delivery, massive range of types/colours. They are based in Abergavenny so if you live near there you could save on postage ;)

So i went ahead & purchased a bulk lot of this Montana Gold along with a few different nozzles. I've tested it & i have to say the colours are brilliant, the low pressure is great as instead of coming out in blasts it comes out smooth and evenly so very little waste/overspray!

For myself i know i will be saving a fortune as I'm scratch building a 1/12 tid so I'm going to be using a lot for the build. Anyway thought i would share this as i think its a good alternative to Halfords & the like! :)

here's link to the Acrylic based (these are called "Montana Gold" and if you scroll down you will see the huge colour selection: https://www.graff-city.com/spray-cans-c128/spray-paint-cans-c76/montana-spray-paint-c90/montana-gold-spray-paint-p64?fbclid=IwAR1EvKxW6BviSJzDMCwyIiD8TtvDqKV7FfQ_1xnxoJzIHkJ9E_ep93PIOb0

And this is the whole range, including specialist types & lacquers etc.. https://www.graff-city.com/spray-cans-c128/spray-paint-cans-c76/montana-spray-paint-c90

They also sell other paint accessories such as wide range of masking tape etc ;)

The reason Halfrauds is expensive ,is they can. Nearly all the stuff in there shops is rip of prices. Use inderpendent shop that sell car paint for 1/2 of halfords . Making a can of say ford polar white,is a computer program that gives the correct mix formular. dosnt add much cost over say standered gloss white,

Used Montana cans at work for 7 years, hundreds if not thousands of cans. Avoid it like the plague

Good spray paint comes from DC Paint Solutions

- Incredibly inconsistent from can to can
- Only two thirds of the can is useable
- Paint spits, leaving solid 1/16” round lumps of paint in your finish
- On warmer days, paint dries before it hits the surface, causing a fuzzy texture that comes off like dust
- Colour inconsistent from can to can
- Spray nozzles have been known to get stuck in the fully open position, will not stop spraying
- Included nozzles are a weird pattern
- They’re high build, unlike Halfords paint. Very difficult to sand
- if you spray too much on, they bubble which is incredibly difficult to level

Just a few of the reasons I (and everyone else I worked with) despised using them

If you and those you work with despise using them, why do you continue :) ?

strange, because i have them (bought about 20+) so far no issues at all & I'm not the only one who has used them who also they are good, also going by reviews from the net there are 1000's of others who also recommend them, which is why i tried them :)

Ive not had any issue to what you are saying in your list, so maybe its the way you are using them/storing them or using the wrong nozzle for your application. The standard nozzles are not ideal for what i was using them for, i tried different nozzles & the one which is best by far is the purple dot (fat).

Each to there own. But like i say i have used them so far with zero issues that you have mentioned so no idea what you are doing wrong!

but to answer a few of the problems you have listed:

"Spits" usually because the spray is to thick or too cold, simple solution, pop the can in bucket of warm water for 10min or so & also be sure to shake well, tbh this is the standard procedure with any spray can & eliminates the "spitting".

"Too thick" sounds like your holding the nozzle too close to the surface your spraying.

"Standard nozzles" as mentioned these were designed with the "Graffiti" artist in mind, the stock cap provided is ideal for this type of artist in mind, but there around another 10+ different style caps, i tried most and for what I'm using them for the fat cap was best. I thing its good that they offer a range of caps to suit different applications. Its not a thing i would complain about! When i was browsing some retailers give you the option to choose your preferred cap when purchasing the can. Some the caps were not included at all etc & you had to purchase seperately (about 15p a cap). As it is now i have a range of caps to suit my needs which is great.

I used to work in a wind tunnel, with a team of modelmakers - half with degrees in the field. We went through thousands of cans of it a year, so I’ve seen every nasty thing they can do, including one can actually exploding in someone’s hand.

They continued using the Montana cans because they were £2 each. We had no say in the matter….

Like I say, I buy my paint from DC Paint solutions, they custom mix any colour you like in 1k or 2k, every can is the same, they do next day on every ordered and for a premium service, they’re very reasonably priced. Never had any issues with a can of theirs

Maybe your employer was getting them for £2 each because they were ones that didn't pass QI, so instead of the the company your employer bought them from binning them they offer them at heavily discounted prices as Grade B, this is quite common with all kinds of products.

But like i say, each to there own, i have about 30 cans with different colours, so far no issues & highly recommend them :)
