Suspicious Caller ID
« on: December 23, 2022, 04:18:28 pm »

unusual Scam  had several calls over the last month re Amazon Prime subscriptions. All the same  If you have any issues press1 for details or 2 for customer support so ignored got in touch with Amazon nope not us.
The funny thing is their caller ID was visible and the recent 2 although different numbers were my area Code.
I rang them and they are none the wiser. Apparently ID Spoofing is common practice and nowt can be done till we all come off the landline

Had a period when I received a number of calls on the landline saying that x amount was due for my Amazon Prime account which I knew wasn't. Just ignored and no longer get any calls,

If they don't announce themselves and leave a message on the answering machine they are ignored.  Friends and relatives change the ring tone so we know to answer.

I understand that you can pretty much choose any called if that you want. This facilitates things like people working from home or call centres where you want a number given out other the the line number actually making the call.

They could control this if they wanted to do so. Digital or copper.

I get quite a lot of unsolicited calls on my mobile. Criminals are not restricted to land lines.

According to Ofcom they will not be able to control it till we all go Voip which is strange . As said the numbers displayed were genuine numbers they could be yours next time and you would no nowt about it till someone phoned you.

Sorry but Ofcom can control it. They choose not to do so because some users (call centres etc) like to use it.

Just because call centres '...like to use it....', presumably to confuse us, their 'targets', does not give them the right to do so. OfCom should do what they're paid to do and defend us against these predators!

True, but my phone automatically silences calls that come from numbers that have been reported as scams

Dialling services is the fancy new name for the Android app that brings up the keypad. Who uses a 3rd party call-blocking app these days?
Enter as if you would dial a new number, bring down menu, change the slider setting in Settings> Caller ID and spam protection

The likely date when landlines could possibly do this is still years off. There's a whole world of countries with creaking old networks to upgrade.
