Bantam Tugs
« on: December 31, 2022, 10:14:37 am »

Happy New Year everyone.

Just a quick question regarding these canal tugs, does anyone know where I can get hold of a set of plans?
Failing that does anyone know their length? With that information I'll build it by eye from photographs. I'm thinking of something like the Will Scarlet.

I have scratch build a few 1/12 scale narrowboats but am now looking to build a 'Thursday' boat that is a bit lighter (bad back sufferer) that's easier to launch and load in and out of the car.

Thanks.

Asking about a Bantam tug is a bit like asking about a Ford car. There are multiple models and considerable differences.

Which Bantam interests you? With your reference to a Thursday boat I am guessing that the Phil Parker build of the Marksman kit figures somewhere.

Try this link:http://www.bhsproject.co.uk/photo_bantams_jm.shtml

& this:

The Phil Parker build is here (starts with the latest post & works backwards):

London Canal Museum did a very basic cut out waterline model which has a better deck shape than many of the models:

If you work on a 21ft length you can scale the rest.

Thanks everyone. Lots to go on here and even a picture of Will Scarlet. I knew you blokes would have the answers.

That's my spring project sorted out. I'll try and post some pictures on here as the project proceeds.

Thanks again.

It will be quite interesting to see how you get on with this one.
Hope it all goes well for you.

I am hoping that you are aware that these boat designs were adapted to suit the buyers needs. The most obvious is that the examples designed for use in the narrow canal system had to fit through the locks whilst the rest were built with more beam.

I look forward to the build.
