Hi Regiment,

I assume you are referring to the big flap sticking up behind the pilot on the F35B fighter on HMS Queen Elizabeth.

It is actually a vent which allows air to be sucked in by a big fan in the fuselage which then blows it out underneath to support the plane when taking off or vertical landing.

It certainly is a BIG fan too, maybe 4.5-5 ft in diameter!

I installed and maintained the massive friction welder at Rolls Royce where they make all the F-35 B fans, and the machine itself was GINORMOUS! And that didn't count the hydraulic power supply that drive it all either.

Just like we have a manual to explain the meanings of smileys, is there one to explain the meanings of all the acronyms use in the RAF F35 descriptions?  %)

AAM- air-to-air missile
P&W- Pratt & Whitney (engine)

Are they only ones not covered by the abbreviations but military speak is often frequented with TLA’s or three-letter-acronyms! Supposed to be quicker to speak the description but unfortunately unless you know the TLA it’s all nonsense! My recent annual assessment had a TLA I had to ask what it meant and I’ve been in for close to 20 years!
