ESC and Motor cuts out.
« on: November 04, 2007, 03:42:29 pm »

I'm new to this, so bear with me.

I have a 6v motor, with a Viper ESC on 6v batteries,

I have setup up the ESC as per the instruction when I put it full throttle forward the motor kicks in and out as if the battery is being disconnected and the re-connected happens around 1-2 times a second, if I only open the throtlle slightly it's fine.

When I put it in Reserve there are no issues...

Batterys are fully charged, trims are set fine on the radio..

Please help

I've seen this on a Tamiya ESC when the stick is pushed hard forward.

The motor goes onto full power from rest so the motor pulls a surge of current - it detects this as a overcurrent and cuts out. It then waits a bit for things to settle down and re-energises the motor which repeats the cycle.

A gentler push forward that allows the motor to spin up before going onto full speed prevents the surging.

also just been trying it again, when going full throttle, the green light intermitenly flickers, and then the red light flickers when the power drops? this only happens when pushing the trim forward..

Could you tell us the following please

What type of motors have you. ?  ( to suppress them you need capacitors wired across them)

What battery are using in Amp hours. ?

What amperage is the ESC rated at. ?

Cheers...ken

The capacitors are used to remove the "electrical spikes" that can cause interference to electrical equipment such as radio gear.
Have you tried resetting the ESC?

thanks for the help so far..

ESC - rated at 15 amp.
Battery - 2 x 6v 4 ah ( wired to give 6V 8ah)
motor - 6v monoperm super 6pol ( lear ( 24amp) load 3 a

What size capacitor will i need and do you just connect it across the pos and neg terminals ?

hi there Areed1

Just been reading the specs for the MTroniks Viper and I was wondering - are you running a separate battery for your RX supply?

Or, are you using the BEC facility? that is built into this Viper or have I been looking at the wrong model Viper?

The reason I ask this - if you try and run a separate power supply to your RX receiver without disconnecting the BEC supply which is (from what I can tell) the red wire, this may cause a similar problem to what you are experiencing.

Its all to do with what they call an 'internal earthloop'.

The monoperm will stall below the rating of the speed controller.
This leaves a set up problem with ESC or Radio Gear or interference, but Monoperm motors do seem pretty good.
Have you or can you borrow another transmitter?

I should be able to just strange the way it is only on the forward, using a 6 channel transmitter / receiver, this happens regardless what channel I am using..

hi Areed1

The Viper speed controller has a braking facility in it, so that when you go astern (backwards) reverse  :)  there is a slight pause to act like a brake.

Just as a thought, try swapping the leads from your speed controller to your motor over.   This may cure the problem.

The other thing is, on your transmitter, you should have a servo reversing switch.   Try switching this over.  This may help to solve the problem.  O0

Any caps you get will be well over the voltage you require but minimum of say 25volt caps.
Also have a look on your speed controller instructions, they may have a recommended suppression, especially if it's a high frequency type. (I don't bother with the diode.)

eventually got it to work.. the transmitter has the normal trims but also in the computer bit has the limits of the servo, forward was set at 150 reverse at 35... reset forward to 35 works perfect...

thanks all for your help...
