What size motors
« on: April 02, 2023, 03:55:16 pm »

Hi, I have a wooden Waveney lifeboat that is around 4 foot long. I need to fit two motors, can anyone give me information on the best size for this model. Thanks

We need to know the size of the props.  Does the boat already have some, or do you have the plans it was built from?

Otherwise the Waveneys were 44'10 so 'around four feet' probably means a scale of 1:12... perhaps someone knows what size props the actual boat has, then it's just a matter of scaling that measurement down by 12.

Hi, the props are 50mm diameter. And yes it’s a 1:12 scale model

50mm props should be spun at no more than 5500RPM, so that should be the top free-running speed of the motor at maximum voltage.

I would recommend a 555-size can motor running on 12v, based on personal experience.  Component Shop has them, among other places.  I'm assuming since you put the question here, you're looking to used a brushed motor system.  :-)

EDIT:  I see they also have 775-size motors with a similar RPM, those would also be suitable.  It depends on how much space you have within the hull.
