Gato Class Aft Torpedo Tubes
« on: May 13, 2023, 01:56:25 pm »

Question. Did Gato class submarines all have / some have external aft torpedo tube doors, faired in to the external hull shape, outside the circular tube doors? See the pic below of USS Pampanito (source: maritime.org. The Revell 1/72 kit has a bulkhead with detail of the circular hatches, which I would like to remove to allow a tiller to be fitted for RC. I do have a Plan B involving gears but removal of the bulkhead and adding external doors would make life easier!

Many did not have the aft torpedo doors installed. Some started with them, but in subsequent modifications they were removed. So, I would say go for it!

If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
