"The S.S. Titania in the South Atlantic", oil painting by FRANK HENRY MASON (1875–1965, English)
SS TITANIA (Captain J. M. Macmillan) lost her propeller on the 6th July, 1900 while on passage from Cape Town to Buenos Aires.
The Master, 3rd Mate Bell and seaman Bosun Johnson performed the miraculous feat of installing a spare prop for which gold watches
and Lloyd's Medals were awarded.

A fictionalised account of this epic feat was written by the great F C Hendry (Shalimar) under the title of "Easting Down".
